Advising Right Now: Sophomore Standing

It is important that you are prepared to respond to questions from freshmen about the sophomore standing process.

In November, the Registrar's Office determines which freshmen are potentially eligible for for sophomore standing. In early December, Dean Julie Norman, Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, will write to eligible freshmen with offer of sophomore status.

The Faculty determine the criteria for eligibility; there are no exceptions or a petition process.

Even if you were not offered sophomore standing as a freshman, you should be ready to discuss with eligible advisees the benefits of declaring it and the factors they should consider before making the decision, which are detailed on the Class of 2018 site along with information on the deadlines for accepting sophomore status as well as the advising options.
