General information

  • All courses are filled by department lottery. Do not pre-register on Websis.

  • Subjects are not filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The instructors use a variety of criteria to determine which students will be given slots. Consult the teacher of the particular subject if you have questions about the selection process.

  • Attendance and preparation is mandatory.

  • Priority will be given to undergraduate students. Graduate student admission is contingent on undergraduate enrollment. This priority has the exception of English Language Studies subjects.

  • In the case of ELS subjects, priority is given to students with at least high-intermediate English skills, those who are Teacher's Assistants or who will be in the future, and to those who intend to pursue academic careers.

  • Questions regarding subject content, selection criteria etc. should be directed to the instructor of the course.

  • Questions/problems concerning the web signup process should be brought to the attention of Jeffrey Pearlin (pearlin@mit.edu).

Lottery Timeline

  • Signup begins at Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 9:00 AM.

  • Signup ends at Monday, December 3, 2007 at 5:00 PM.

  • Students who have been placed in a subject will receive an email message by 12:00 noon on Friday, December 7, 2007. If you do not receive an email by this date, then you were not placed in a Foreign Languages and Literatures IAP credit subject (however you may be on a waiting list - see below).

  • Students who are given slots in a subject must confirm their intention to take the subject no later than 5:00 PM on Monday, December 10, 2007. Exact instructions for confirming a place will be included with the initial placement message. Failure to confirm will eliminate the student from the subject's roster and the slot will be offered to someone on the waiting list.

  • If there are still slots available after the confirmation deadline, students on the waiting list will be offered places (in an order determined by the instructor) until the subject is filled.

  • In the unlikely event that slots are available for any Foreign Languages and Literatures IAP credit subject after the waiting list process is complete, notice will be posted to this web page.
