Our English language subjects are designed for the intermediate through advanced/bilingual English speakers that form a substantial part of MIT’s multicultural student body. A major goal of the program is to foster facility and appropriateness in a variety of academic and professional contexts. Any student earning a degree at MIT can register for one of the subjects listed above. These grade- and credit-bearing classes meet according to the MIT academic calendar. They involve homework and exams.

Another component of the ESL program is a series of classes in the Study of Language that bring together theoretical and applied linguistics, as well as relevant areas of cognitive science. Undergraduates can include one of these courses as a requirement for fulfilling a concentration in ESL.

Note: MIT's English Language Program cannot accommodate students from outside MIT. See the link to the left for other programs in the Boston area.

The English Evaluation Test is given yearly in late August and late January to new international graduate students. This diagnostic test may provide students and their advisors recommendations for specific ESL courses. Visiting scientists and scholars are welcome to take the EET to determine their strengths and weaknesses in English.

Visiting scientists and scholars, postdoctoral fellows, and other international or bicultural members of the community who are not regular students may attend one of the ESL courses at MIT, depending on these factors:
  1. Availability of space in the desired course.
  2. Appropriateness of match between the course level and content, and the prospective student's English ability and needs.
  3. Payment of $550.00 tuition per regular term course; $150.00 tuition per IAP mini-course.
  4. Attendance in the course from the start of the term. (If attendance in a regular course is impossible, non-student members of the MIT community have other options for English study. They can work independently, and at no charge, using MIT resources.)
The Language Conversation Exchange
The Language Conversation Exchange (LCE), sponsored by the Medical Department, finds conversation partners for those interested in practicing a language with a native speaker. Those interested in practicing English with a native speaker can coach this English-speaking partner in his/her native language in exchange.

Contact Jennifer Recklet at 253-1614 to fill out an application on http://web.mit.edu/medical/spousesandpartners/LCE.htm or stop by the office at the Medical Department E23-376 on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Private study with a tutor
You can also arrange for private study with a tutor. Please contact Jane Dunphy (dunphy@mit.edu) for more information.
