Portuguese, the most recent addition to the languages offered by Foreign Languages and Literatures at MIT, is the world’s 7th language and is spoken by over 170 million people in nine different countries on four continents, as well as in many immigrant communities in the United States.

MIT’s Portuguese program offers instruction at the beginning and intermediate levels of language and culture, giving special attention to Brazilian Portuguese. The Portuguese program’s goals are to prepare students to communicate effectively with native speakers as well as to acquaint them with the culture and civilization of the Portuguese-speaking world, and in this way prepare them to function successfully in a Portuguese-speaking environment.
