Syllabus

Interpretation and analysis of works by international filmmakers who focus on male homosexual desire. Primary attention given to ways in which screen representations of same-sex desire affect narrative form, cinematic style, and human vision. Contrasts Hollywood entertainment with independent and international artworks. Films studied in cultural and socio-political contexts. Directors include: Pedro Almodovar, Gregg Araki, Greg Berlanti, Jean Genet, Todd Haynes, Derek Jarman, Isaac Julien, Marlon Riggs, Gus Van Sant, and SÈbastien Lifshitz. Foreign language films screened with subtitled versions. Taught in English.
