Syllabus

Explores the aesthetic, political, and psychological dimensions of bilingual arts, in the U.S. and internationally. Topics covered include: the poetics of the Borderlands, narratives of exile, heteroglossia: gains and losses, hybrid games, political dialogues, code-switching and creativity, bilingual theater, music, film, the art of translation, humanistic vs. scientific approaches to bilingual discourse, and bicultural spaces. Guest lectures by, and discussions with, anthropologists, writers, linguists, cultural critics, and performers. Taught in English.
