Subject examines autobiographies and memoirs by international literary women of the second half of the twentieth century. Authors include Jill Conway, bell hooks, Esmeralda Santiago, Maxine Hong Kingston, Nathalie Sarraute, and Leila Ahmed. Special emphasis on the experiences of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Issues of education and family, of relationship to parents and siblings, of gender, race, religion and ethnicity, of identity and self-representation are examined, as well as the ways these themes are given literary shape. Students are encouraged to create a chapter of their own memoirs as one of the assignments. Taught in English. |
