Syllabus

Introduction to the ways in which fiction responds to the larger context from which it emerges. Works include novels, plays, and short stories from South Asia, East Asia, Europe and the New World. Through this fiction, students examine the unique ways in which each culture has imagined itself. Attention given to the historical context, political moment, and cultural assumptions about class, ethnicity and gender in these works. Authors include Tagore, Yoshimoto, Lu Xun, Mahfouz, Puig, Walcott, Tolstoy, Rifaat and Laclos. Taught in English. Enrollment limited.
