Explores the rich literature of contemporary exiled writers such as Milan Kundera, Andrei Makine, Salman Rushdie, Assia Djebar, and Bharati Mukherjee. The forms and thematic preoccupations of these works convey the conditions of uprootedness from home, the conceptions of East and West, the importance of memory and history, and the shaping of cultural and bi-cultural identity. Taught in English.
