Examines the wide-ranging body of literature by German and Jewish writers produced in response to the Holocaust. Considers the moral and aesthetic challenges involved in imagining atrocity from both sides of the historical divide. Through the work of writers Elie Wiesel, Aharon Appelfeld, David Grossman, Ida Fink, Paul Celan, Bernhard Schlink, Gunther Grass and W. G. Sebald, students confront questions of historical guilt, memory and amnesia. Explores problems of bearing witness and finding a sufficient language for unbearable events. Taught in English. |
