"Globalization" is one of the big buzz words we encounter almost every day. But what do "globalization" and "internationalization"mean? In this seminar we'll explore the meanings of these words, starting with the personal and then moving outward. Many international students are, in a sense, already "global players." Many American students are thinking about eventually working for a company that operates globally. How do these dynamics affect our personal lives, how will they shape our futures? Our lively discussions will be enriched and contextualized by some introductory readings about globalization with respect to its economic, political, and cultural dimensions. A couple of expeditions into what they call "the real world" will bring us to companies in the Boston area that are operating on a global level, to hear more about how globalization is affecting the everyday practices and business strategies of these companies. Students will be expected to read, write one short essay, and lead seminar discussions in rotation. The hope is that this seminar will serve as a meeting point for incoming international students and students from the US. |
