![]() The Program The Freshman Leadership Program was created in 1996 as the first MIT pre-orientation program. It began with the intention of creating a close-knit MIT community, equipping FLPers with the leadership skills, charisma, and maturity necessary to lead their class through the upcoming four years of MIT. FLP participants and counselors have a strong history of making their mark on the MIT campus. From student government leaders, to starting new student groups, to founding global service organizations, the Freshman Leadership Program truly inspires participants to take an active role in the community. FLP challenges students to learn about themselves through an experience that cannot be duplicated at MIT. Although leadership is often defined by the offices one holds and the recognition one attains, there is another aspect to the meaning of leadership. FLP believes a leader is someone who has the initiative to actively better his or her environment. FLP is a different take on leadership. We are not a series of lectures and you will never sit in a classroom. Rather, students enjoy a blend of fun, hands-on activities and eye-opening discussions. When students return to campus, it is not uncommon to hear them saying, "FLP was the best preparation I could have possibly had to make me ready for a great freshman year." The program, completely run by MIT student counselors, is a fantastic way for students to get to know other members of their class, to discuss the upcoming freshman year, and to simply participate in a lot of fun activities. Discover why participants call the FLP experience "amazing," "phenomenal," and give it "two thumbs up." What will we do? While there are many dimensions of leadership, FLP focuses on how leaders should be cognizant of a variety of social and moral issues in establishing inclusive communities. FLP participants will be challenged in a variety of settings, such as large-group activities and discussions, team-building challenges, and small group meetings. FLP is an excellent opportunity to learn about yourself, your future peers, and MIT. Program logistics
