INTRODUCTION TO THE DATA/OPINION MODULE
INTRODUCTION TO THE DATA/OPINION MODULE
Rationale for this module
The goal of this module is to allow students to gauge what they have learnt
so far - from the answers to the questionnaires and the corresponding forums
- against a set of broader and more objective socio-cultural information.
Up to this point, the students' main informants have been their transatlantic
partners. The latter are authentic informants since they know and experience
their culture first-hand. However, what they know and experience is strongly
shaped and filtered by their age, their milieu, their background, their degree
of education which - as varied as it may be - only presents pieces of the
cultural puzzle.
It was deemed important therefore to give students the opportunity to place
what they have discovered so far, against a much broader set of information,
namely statistics and opinion polls from both the United States and France.
Access to these nationwide data on statistics and surveys allows students
to find facts and opinion polls that will either confirm or contradict (a
very important aspect!) some of their earlier findings.
