Based on the results of the survey on "money" and the
survey on "elite," it seems that we Americans associate
money with success a lot more than the French do, yet we have
a lower opinion of money than they do. Such is an interesting
paradox. We were brought up believing two conflicting ideas.
First, society tells us that money brings you everything. As
the ultimate capitalist we are, we admire and envy the rich.
However, traditional puritanical values teach us a second idea --
money is bad. Money corrupts our values and creates class
differences. These two different values create the situation where most
people work their butts off to get rich, but they
have no respect for the kind of people they wish to become.
