It seems that, aside from the colors, which are mentioned a lot by the French as well, only the Americans describe physical characteristics of a waving flag: "big", "flying", "cloth", "wave", "flaps in wind".
I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that here in the US we are more used to seeing flags all over the place.

En effet, nous constatons une différence flagrante entre la vision du drapeau de la part des Américains et de Français. Aux Etats-Unis, il y a en effet des drapeaux patriotiques partout, et c'est une bonne chose, à condition que cela ne devienne pas juste un objet de décoration. En France, si quelqu’un affiche un drapeau Français devant chez lui, il sera "insulté" de raciste, Nationaliste (qui a une connotation négative en France). Je trouve bien qu’aux Etats-Unis on puisse afficher son Nationalisme en toute immunité.
Aux Etats-Unis, quelle est la connotation (signification) exacte de « nationaliste », et à partir de quel moment passe t’on du Nationalisme à l’extrémisme ?

Je constate qu’entre les réponses que vous avez pu avoir, la différence est énorme!!! Pour nous autres Français, le drapeau est un symbole, il reflète l'Histoire de notre Pays. En effet, l'amour qu'on a pour notre drapeau, et les valeurs qu'on y attache nous empêchent de l'utiliser à n importe quelles occasions comme "des habits", ou "des gâteaux d’anniversaire"; cependant, il est vrai que c est vraiment dommage qu en France on ne puisse pas montrer à tous que l'on est fier de notre Pays!! Avec tous les problèmes du moment( immigration, ...), on serait tout de suite attaqué de racisme! Aujourd’hui en France on ne peut plus afficher notre nationalisme sans se faire montrer du doigt, c est pourquoi je trouve que les Américains sont plus louables sur ce sujet à part leur façon de tout exagérer!

For both Americans and the French, the flag is a representation of deeper convictions about love for and devotion to country at the cost of others. It is the rallying point for patriotism and pride in country, and is likely the case not only for the Americans and the French, but also for any nation for which nationalism and national integrity is at a premium over other allegiances.

I thought the graph that Clemence put online was very helpful for this topic. It seems that the values that we associate with the flag are very similar. Considering the surge of patriotism in the US right now, it's surprising to see that patriotism, while frequent on both sides, was actually a more common association on the French side. Perhaps this is due to the fact that America is such a "melting pot" of different backgrounds that the American flag is not so unified a symbol of patriotism as it is for the French? That is, since many Americans have immigrated from a different cultural backgrounds, there isn't as strong a patriotic focus for the flag?

Alicia, merci pour ta réponse, cependant tu dis que les Français sont aussi patriotiques que les Américains, ce que je n approuve pas beaucoup étant donné que la majorité des Français sont très égoïstes et pense plutôt à leur propre intérêt qu' à un intérêt commun!! ils se réveillent que lorsqu'ils se passent des choses dramatiques mais sinon, ils critiqueront facilement quelqu'un qui se dira patriotique et qui lèvera son drapeau!!! c'est attristant de constater cela, mais les Français sont pas très expansifs et n' apprécient pas le fait qu'on le soit!!

I was looking at the graph made by Clemence d'Herbes, and according to that, it looks as though we interpret flags quite similarly. Although through a discussion in class, we noticed that there are significantly different inferences made with putting a flag up say in front of someone's house.
