Cambridge,
MA (June 10 2002) – Forest
City Enterprises presents the Boston area's acclaimed Balinese music and dance
ensemble, Gamelan Galak Tika, in a spectacular outdoor
concert on Wednesday, July
10, at 6 pm on the University Park Common, at 45/75 Sidney Street in Central
Sq., Cambridge (rain date: Thursday, July 11).
Admission is free.
Gamelan Galak Tika begins its 10th
concert season with a presentation
of the gamelan experience in its preferred environment: the outdoors. For centuries, the shimmering sound of the
gamelan has carried through evenings of work and play in Bali, and now GGT is
pleased to bring this authentic, dazzling atmosphere to the people of Boston. The program includes traditional music and
dance, featuring a showcase of the intricate and compelling Balinese dance
style with both solo and ensemble dance pieces. New works composed by GGT members, including the group’s renowned
artistic director Evan Ziporyn, will also be performed. The event is a highlight of what promises to
be a groundbreaking performance season.
This concert is presented by Forest City
Enterprises (www.fceinc.com), a real
estate company managing the University Park properties. It is made possible in part by a 2002
Creating & Presenting Grant from the Cambridge Arts Council (www.ci.cambridge.ma.us/~CAC), an
organization committed to funding a diverse range of cultural activities in
Cambridge and surrounding communities.
Gamelan
Galak Tika is the Boston area's first Balinese gamelan. A community ensemble in
residence at MIT, GGT was founded in September 1993 for the purpose of studying
and performing both traditional and modern Balinese music and dance, as well as
to develop new works in collaboration with Balinese and American artists. For more information about this or other
