How to Apply

Presentation Formats

We invite proposals for presentations on humor as a political tool or subversive strategy.  Graduate students, advanced undergraduates, performers, practitioners, artists, and activists are encouraged to examine, reflect upon, or demonstrate the uses of jokes, irony, satire, parody, and performance from a literary, theatrical, multimedia, historical, scientific, sociological, anthropological, or interdisciplinary perspective. Hands-on workshop proposals also accepted.

Presentations may take three formats: individual papers, prepared performances, and workshops. 250-word presentation abstracts are due on February 15, 2008. The conference will begin on the evening of April 4 and extend all day on April 5. It will take place at MIT. Presenters are encouraged to attend as many of the conference events as they can throughout the weekend.

Individual Papers:
Selected papers will be divided into interdisciplinary topic-based panels. Panels will include three student presenters and one discussant and will last for 90 minutes. Each presenter will have exactly 20 minutes to presend her/his work and there will be a half-hour Q&A afterward.

Opportunities for meeting fellow panelists, workshopping papers and presentations, and working with mentors on presentation style and format may be available. More information will be provided upon acceptance of your proposal.

Prepared Performances:
There will be an opportunity during the weekend for music, theater, poetry, performance art, and other performances (specific format TBA). If you have a relevant piece of work that you would like to be considered, please submit an abstract below and indicate the length of time you will need for your performance. Please do not submit proposals for performances that are longer than 20 minutes. Also, we are interested in having Q&A and talk-back sessions after performances. Please indicate in your submission whether this will be of interest to you.

Workshops:
Performance-based presentations may take the form of a hands-on workshop. Please include a detailed description of the activities that will occur in the workshop and a maxmum number of participants.
