This guide is for Alliance characters. By the time you're of high enough level to kill VanCleef in the Deadmines, the first few Deadmines quests will be well into the green. So consider planning multiple runs into instances. In my experience, having a full party is more important than being of slightly higher level. I would expect five 24s to have an easier time taking out VanCleef than four 26s. Class balance is not as important as one might expect, and taking groups of different compositions can make the playing experience more varied. On one run, you might have a mage or two providing crowd control and higher damage; on another run, you might instead have a lot of tanking, leading to more epic battles. It's good to reevaluate your playing strategy when going into an instance. Review all those abilities you never use while soloing and think about whether they might be more useful in an area full of elite monsters. Ask yourself whether your old standby tactics will be less effective or will be more likely to pull unwanted aggression. There are lots of detailed guides on the net for how to play in instance groups (http://www.wowwiki.com/Instance_Grouping_Guide for one example). These guides can be a good source of ideas, but in a friendly group it's probably more fun to figure out all of that stuff as you go. There are lots of different ways for most classes to effectively contribute to an instance group, so there's no need to follow a prescribed formula. In the preparation guide below, an asterix marks the quests which can be obtained before the first run to an instance area. ------------------------------------- Instance: The Deadmines (Level 17-22) ------------------------------------- Location: Westfall, Moonbrook (SW) *[17] Red Silk Bandanas Collect 10 Red Silk Bandanas *[18] Collecting Memories Collect 4 Miner's Union Cards *[20] Oh Brother... Item from Foreman Thistlenettle *[20] Underground Assault Item from Sneed's Shredder *[22] The Defias Brotherhood (part 8) Item from VanCleef *[22] The Test of Righteousness (Paladin) Ground item inside the Deadmines Preparation: Complete "The Defias Brotherhood" chain, begun by Gryan Stoutmantle at Sentinel Hill, up through the Defias Traitor escort. (Note: Gryan Stoutmantle also gives the "The People's Militia" quest chain, a series of Defias kill quests. This chain is not relevant to the Deadmines.) This chain involves a lot of travel, so make sure to allocate some time. When you turn in the Defias Messenger step, you will have to start the next step of the quest by talking to the Defias Traitor nearby; if he is in the process of being escorted, you may have to wait a few minutes. Visit the Dwarven District of Stormwind. Get "Underground Assault" from Shoni the Silent in the open area, and "Collecting Memories" and "Oh Brother..." from the Explorer's Guild in the southeast corner of the district. (These three quests can be shared.) If you are a paladin, attain level 20 and pick up "The Test of Righteousness" from Duthorian Rall in the Stormwind cathedral, and then talk to Jordan Stilwell just outside the gates of Ironforge to get the relevant step. The ground item you need is inside the instance between the ogre and the goblin shredder. Visit Scout Riell in the Sentinel Hill tower to get "Red Silk Bandanas". You must have done the Defias Traitor escort, and there may be other prereqs as well. (Don't confuse this quest with "Red Leather Bandanas" given by scout Galiaan, or any of the other Defias bandana quests.) Notes: A group in the high teens can complete the first three quests without even entering the instance. The union cards and the badge are obtained from the undead elites in the purple tunnel to the south. A group of average level 20 can probably complete "Underground Assault", as well as the paladin requirement, by clearing the first third of the instance. To actually take on VanCleef, the final instance boss, the group should have average level 23 or higher (probably at least 24 if the group is not well-balanced), and should expect to take several hours even if things go well. After killing VanCleef, make sure to loot both his head and the letter off of his body. The head is necessary for the quest turnin and the letter is necessary to continue the Defias quest chain into the Stockade. If the group wipes after killing VanCleef, you will likely not be able to recover the quest items, so make sure to prepare some inventory spaces before the final boss fight and to loot VanCleef's body if it looks like you will die before taking out all of his helpers. --------------------------------------- Instance: Wailing Caverns (Level 17-21) --------------------------------------- Location: The Barrens [17] Deviate Hides Collect 20 drops from deviates *[18] Trouble at the Docks Item from Mad Magglish *[18] Smart Drinks Collect 6 drops from ectoplasms [21] Deviate Eradication Kill 7 each of four kinds of deviates Preparation: There are two ways to get to Ratchet: either travel south from Duskwood (south of Elwynn Forest) to Stranglethorn Vale and down the road to Booty Bay, from which you can take a boat, or travel south from Darkshore to Ashenvale, travel all the way down the road to the southeast to the Barrens, and then travel to the center-east side of the zone. Either way is dangerous for level-appropriate characters, so a high-level escort or warlock teleport is warranted. In Ratchet, pick up "Trouble at the Docks" from Crane Operator Bigglefuzz and "Smart Drinks" from Mebok Mizzyrix. (These quests can be shared.) The other two quests are obtained inside the instance. --------------------------------------- Instance: Shadowfang Keep (Level 22-25) --------------------------------------- Location: Silverpine Forest *[22] The Test of Righteousness (Paladin) Ground item *[25] The Orb of Soran'ruk (Warlock) Drop from darksouls Preparation: To get to Silverpine Forest, travel north from the Wetlands to the Arathi Highlands, west to Hillsbrad, and west again. Or swim to Southshore from Menethil and travel west. A high-level escort is warranted if you're travelling through Arathi. If you are a paladin, attain level 20 and pick up "The Test of Righteousness" from Duthorian Rall in the Stormwind cathedral, and then talk to Jordan Stilwell just outside the gates of Ironforge. If you are a warlock, do your succubus class quest, and talk to Doan Karhan in the Barrens to obtain "The Orb of Soran'Ruk". Notes: Nothing for Alliance characters to do here if you aren't a paladin or warlock. The paladin ground item is inside the stables once you get out into the courtyard. ----------------------------------------- Instance: Blackfathom Deeps (Level 22-27) ----------------------------------------- Location: Ashenvale, The Zoram Strand (NW) *[22] Seeking the Kor Gem (Paladin) Collect 1 random drop from naga *[23] Knowledge in the Deeps Ground item inside instance *[24] In Search of Thaelrid Find Argent Guard Thaelrid *[24] Researching the Corruption Collect 8 drops from naga *[25] Twilight Falls Collect 10 drops from cultists *[25] The Orb of Soran'ruk (Warlock) Collect 3 drops from acolytes [27] Blackfathom Villainy Item from Twilight Lord Kelris Preparation: Pick up "Knowledge in the Deeps" from Gerrig Bonegrip in the Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge. Pick up "Researching the Corruption" from Gershala Nightwhisper in Auberdine. Pick up "Twilight Falls" from Argent Guard Manados in the Crafter's Terrace in Darnassus, and "In Search of Thaelrid" from Dawnwatcher Shaedlass in the same place. (These quests can be shared.) "Blackfathom Villainy" is obtained inside the instance. If you are a paladin, attain level 20 and pick up "The Test of Righteousness" from Duthorian Rall in the Stormwind cathedral, and then talk to Jordan Stilwell just outside the gates of Ironforge. Then talk to Thundris Windreaver in Auberdine. If you are a warlock, do your succubus class quest, and talk to Doan Karhan in the Barrens to obtain "The Orb of Soran'Ruk". Notes: A full group should not expect to complete "Twilight Falls" in one run; there just aren't enough cultists. When you reach the island with all the turtles on it, search carefully for underwater passages before continuing on. The quest item for "Knowledge in the Deeps" is here, as is Thaelrid (who ends "In Search of Thaelrid" and gives "Blackfathom Villainy"). If you continue on to defeat the cultists without finding Thaelrid first, you will not be able to complete "Blackfathom Villainy" in the same run, since Twilight Lord Kelris will already be dead. ------------------------------------ Instance: The Stockade (Level 25-29) ------------------------------------ Location: Stormwind, Canal District NE of the Mage Quarter *[25] What Comes Around... Item from Targorr the Dread *[26] Crime and Punishment Item from Dextran Ward *[26] Quell the Uprising Kill three different kinds of elite Defias *[26] The Color of Blood Collect 10 Red Wool Bandanas *[27] The Fury Runs Deep Item from Kam Deepfury *[29] The Stockade Riots Item from Bazil Thedd Preparation: Kill VanCleef in the Deadmines, loot the letter from his body, and turn it in to the Cathedral District in Stormwind to get "The Stockade Riots". Complete "The Dark Iron War" in the Wetlands to obtain "The Fury Runs Deep". The Dark Iron War is a level 30 elite quest, so you may want to skip this or get high-level help with it depending on what level you are. Visit Guard Berton in Lakeshire to pick up "What Comes Around...". Visit Councilman Millstipe in Darkshire to pick up "Crime and Punishment". Visit Nikova Raskol in the streets of Old Town in Stormwind to pick up "The Color of Blood". Visit Warden Thelwater outside the instance entrance to pick up "Quell the Uprising". (These quests can be shared.) Notes: The Stockade is a small, densely-populated instance. Your greatest threat is enemies running away and fetching adds. A paladin or warlock can reduce this threat. ---------------------------------- Instance: Gnomeregan (Level 26-35) ---------------------------------- Location: Dun Morogh (NW) *[26] Save Techbot's Brain! Item from Techbot *[27] Gnogaine Collect glow from trogg [??] A Fine Mess Escort Kernobee to exit [30] The Only Cure is More Green Glow Collect glow from slime *[30] Gyrodrillmatic Excavationors Collect 24 robo-mechanical guts *[30] Data Rescue Visit punch card machines [30] The Sparklematic 5200! Clean grime-encrusted objects *[30] Essential Artificials Collect 12 essential artificials [34] Grime-Encrusted Ring Clean grime-encrusted ring [34] Return of the Ring Return cleaned ring to owner *[35] The Grand Betrayal Kill Mekgineer Thermaplugg Preparation: Visit Shoni the Silent in the Dwarven District of Stormwind to pick up "Gyrodrillmatic Excavationors". Visit Tinker Town in Ironforge to pick up "Save Techbot's Brain!", "Essential Artificials", "Klockmort's Essentials", "Data Rescue", and "The Grand Betrayal". (These quests can be shared.) Visit Ozzie Togglevolt in Kharanos (his house is to the north of town on the west side of the road) to pick up "Gnogaine". (You may have obtained some quests not mentioned above, like "Tinkermaster Overspark", "The Day After", "Castpipe's Task", and "Klockmort's Essentials". These are optional redirection quests which reward a small amount of experience for finding the questgivers for the real quests.) (Thottbot thinks you can obtain the level 35 quest "Rig Wars" from Nogg in Orgrimmar as an alliance character. I doubt it, but maybe someone would like to try.) Notes: You can fill the phial for Gnogaine outside the instance, as soon as you start runing into troggs. Once you have it, you can run back to Ozzie to get the continuation, "The Only Cure is More Green Glow". Techbot is also outside the instance, in a room to the west of the big circular room. The non-elite addled lepers outside the instance occasionally drop the first punchcard needed for "Data Rescue". The first punchcard machine is in the big circular room outside of the instance. The instance entrance is to the west off the hall which leads to the big circular room. After you enter the instance and head down the hall, you will be circumnavigating a ring. The first hallway on the left leads to an NPC. Talking to the NPC will start a fairly difficult defensive encounter culminate in having to fight a 32 elite. Only start this if your party can handle one of those. The second hallway on the left of the ring leads down to the resistance camp. Here you can find a mailbox, a vendor, and machines to clean the grime-encrusted objects you've been picking up. Once you get the high potency radioactive fallout for "The Only Cure is More Green Glow", you have two hours to turn the quest in before you have to get more. If you get far enough into the instance, you can get a workshop key which lets you enter the instance fairly close to the end. You have to get pretty far in, though. You can also skip over large parts of the instance quickly by jumping down from the tops of rings. In the final combat with Thermaplugg, someone (not the healer) should be on button-pressing duty. When a machine is electrified, run over and press its button. If you clean the grime-encrusted ring, you can bring it to Talvash del Kissel in the Mystic Ward of Ironforge. He will offer to improve it a little. -------------------------------------- Instance: Razorfen Kraul (Level 26-34) -------------------------------------- Location: The Barrens (S) *[26] Blueleaf Tubers Collect ten blueleaf tubers [27] Willix the Importer Escort Willix to the entrance *[28] Fire Hardened Mail (Warrior) Item from Roogug [30] Mortality Wanes Return pendant to Treshala *[34] The Crone of the Kraul Item from Razorflank Preparation: See the wailing cavern preparation notes for directions to The Barrens. Visit Mebok Mizzyrix in Ratchet to obtain "Blueleaf Tubers". Find Lonebrow's Journal in Thousand Needles near the great lift. From the Barrens, travel south to the great lift, ride the lift down to Thousand Needles, and then look to your right for a skeleton. Once you have the journal, take it to Falfindel Waywarder in Feralas. (Don't actually enter Feralas; just travel to the northwestern border of Thousand Needles and look for the elf encampment there.) This will get you "The Crone of the Kraul". If you are a warrior, attain level 20 and visit Furen Longbeard in the Dwarven District of Stormwind to get "Fire Hardened Mail". (There may be prereqs; I'm not certain.) To find Roogug, turn left at the first fork in the path; when you reach a gap, there should be a root spanning it. Notes: Treshala is in the second floor of a building in the Tradesman's Terrace in Darnassus. You'll need to take an overpass from the weapons shop. -------------------------------------- Instance: Razorfen Downs (Level 35-42) -------------------------------------- Location: The Barrens (S) *[35] A Host of Evil Kill three kinds of monsters [37] Scourge of the Downs Escort Belnistrasz [??] Extinguishing the Idol Defeat many monsters quickly *[42] Bring the Light Kill Amnennar the Coldbringer Preparation: Visit Archbishop Bendictus in the Cathedral District in Stormwind to get "Bring the Light". (This quest is not sharable.) Visit Myriam Moonsinger near the entrance to Razorfen Downs to get "A Host of Evil". (This quest can be shared.) Notes: I've never been in here. "Extinguishing the Idol" is supposed to be very difficult, probably requiring a powerful party with lots of area-of-effect damage. ------------------------------- Instance: Uldaman (Level 35-47) ------------------------------- Location: Badlands (N) *[35] A Sign of Hope (part 2) Find Hammertoe Grez outside instance *[36] Power Stones Collect batteries from dark irons *[38] Agmond's Fate (part 2) Collect urns outside instance *[40] The Lost Dwarves Find Baelog inside instance [??] The Hidden Chamber Open and explore the hidden chamber [40] Amulet of Secrets Item from Magregan Deepshadow [40] Prospect of Faith Bring amulet to Ironforge *[40] Solution to Doom Find tablet in Sealed Hall *[40] Power in Uldaman (Mage) Item from Obsidian Sentinel [41] The Shattered Necklace Return necklace to Ironforge [42] Back to Uldaman Find paladin inside instance *[42] Uldaman Reagent Run Collect 12 Magenta Fungus Caps [42] Indurium Ore Collect 4 indurium ore [43] Find the Gems Find gems for necklace *[43] Reclaimed Treasures Find treasure in North Common Hall [44] Restoring the Necklace Item from Archaedas [45] The Lost Tablets of Will Ground item inside instance [47] The Platinum Discs Deliver discs to Ironforge Preparation: A little bit south of the northern entrance to the Badlands is a dig site full of non-elite dark irons. On the south side of the dig site are some tents and tables; near one of the tables is a map. Operate on the map to gain the quest "A Sign of Hope". This preparation is quick and begins the chain which includes "Amulet of Secrets", "Prospect of Faith", and eventually "The Lost Tablets of Will". Visit Prospector Stormpike in the Hall of Explorers in Ironforge to pick up "The Lost Dwarves". Also here, visit Krom Stoutarm to get "Reclaimed Treasures". Visit Rigglefuzz in the Badlands (south of Angor Fortress between the two mountains shown on the map) to pick up "Power Stones". Visit Theldurin the Lost in the Badlands (all the way due south of the northern entrance) to pick up "Solution to Doom". (These quests can be shared.) Visit Ghak Healtouch in Thelsamar to pick up "Badlands Reagent Run". Complete this quest and return to Ghak to get "Uldaman Reagent Run". Visit Prospector Ironband east of the lake in Loch Modan to get "Agmond's Fate". Complete this quest and the follow-up to get "Agmond's Fate" (part two). In the Mirage Racing Flats in Thousand Needles, complete "Salt Flat Venom" and "Hardened Shells". (Not 100% certain of these prereqs.) This will allow you to pick up "Martek the Exiled" from Fizzle Brassbolts. Now visit Martek the Exiled in the Badlands, south of Angor Fortress between the two mountains shown on the map. He will give you the quest "Indurium". Collect indurium flakes from the troggs near Agmond's end (or inside Uldaman) and return to Martek to obtain "News for Fizzle". Return to Fizzle Brassbolts in the racing flats. After a short followup sequence, you should get the repeatable quest "Indurium Ore", which allows you to convert four indurium ore into 6 silver (there is no other reward). If you are a mage, attain level 35 and speak to your mage trainer to get "Return to the Marsh". Speak with Tabetha in Dustwallow Marsh to obtain "The Infernal Orb", and go to Desolace to complete it. This will get you "Power in Uldaman". Notes: The dark irons outside the instance occasionally drop a necklace which starts the chain including "The Shattered Necklace", "Back to Uldaman", "Find the Gems", and "Restoring the Necklace". The necklace drop does not duplicate, unfortunately. (You must complete "Lore For a Price" after returning the necklace to Talvash del Kissel in the Mystic Ward of Ironforge in order to get "Back to Uldaman".) Sometimes Hammertoe Grez is bugged and won't accept quest turnins. Very annoying. After you return Hammertoe's amulet to Ironforge, you will get "An Ambassador of Evil", a quest to kill an elite inside Angor Fortress. Do this quest (it's not terribly difficult) in order to get "The Lost Tablets of Will". Finishing "Solution to Doom" and its followup delivery quest yields "The Star, the Hand, and the Heart". When you enter the instance, start by visiting the room off to the south. The master enchanter trainer is inside the instance, a little ways past the hidden chamber room. Being able to deal AOE damage is a big help in this instance. ----------------------------------------- Instance: Scarlet Monastery (Level 38-40) ----------------------------------------- Location: Tirisfal Glades (NE) *[38] Mythology of the Titans Ground item inside first instance *[40] Rituals of Power (Mage) Ground item inside first instance *[40] In the Name of the Light Kill bosses in three instances Preparation: Visit Librarian Mae Paledust in the Hall of Explorers in Ironforge to pick up "Mythology of the Titans". (This quest can be shared.) If you are a mage, attain level 40 and visit your trainer. Follow the resulting quest chain until you have "Rituals of Power". In Desolace, go to Nijel's Point (east of the northern entrance) and complete "Down the Scarlet Path" by killing 30 undead ravagers. Then deliver the letter to Raleigh the Devout in Southshore (second floor of the inn) to pick up "In the Name of the Light". Travel north from Silverpine Forest to reach Tirisfal Glades. (You can cut around the west side of Alterac to save a little time, but there's a big wall on the southern side of Tirisfal which forces you to enter from the road in Silverpine Forest.) Notes: When you enter the monastery, you will find yourself in a large room with two open instance entrances and two locked doors. Take the instance entrance on the right and clear the library. This will get you the key to the other two instances. (The open instance on the left is only relevant to horde characters, apparently.) -------------------------------- Instance: Maraudon (Level 42-51) -------------------------------- Location: Desolace (W) *[42] Shadowshard Fragments Collect 10 Shadowshard Fragments *[47] Twisted Evils Collect 25 Theradric Crystal Carvings *[47] Vyletongue Corruption Heal 8 Vylestem Vines *[48] The Pariah's Instructions Obtain the Amulet of Union [49] Legends of Maraudon Obtain the Celebrian Rod and Diamond [49] The Scepter of Celebras Obtain the Scepter of Celebras *[51] Corruption of Earth and Seed Kill Princess Theradras [51] Seed of Life Take the seed to the Moonglade Preparation: Visit Archmage Tervosh in the mage tower of Theramore to pick up "Shadowshard Fragments". Visit Willow in Desolace (at the hut where the road from the north entrance turns to the west) to pick up "Twisted Evils". Visit Keeper Marandis in Nijel's Point to pick up "Corruption of Earth and Seed". (These quests can be shared.) Visit Talendra in Nijel's Point to pick up "Vyletongue Corruption". Visit the Centaur Pariah in the far southern area of Desolace (southwest of Mannoroc Coven) to pick up "The Pariah's Instructions". Notes: Cavindra, the questgiver for "Legends of Maraudon", is located in the orange section of the outer network of caves leading to the instance. Finishing this quest gets you the Scepter of Celebras, which allows a party to teleport to the final part of the instance from the instance entrance. "The Pariah's Instructions" used to be mutually exclusive with "Seed of Life", and used to be shareable. Neither is the case any more. ---------------------------------- Instance: Zul'Farrak (Level 45-50) ---------------------------------- *[45] Scarab Shells Collect 9 Uncracked Scarab Shells *[45] Troll Temper Collect 20 Troll Temper *[46] Tiara of the Deep Item from Hydromancer Velratha *[47] Divino-matic Rod Item from Sergeant Bly *[47] Nekrum's Medallion Item from Nekrum Gutchewer *[47] The Prophecy of Mosh'aru Items from Theka and Velratha *[50] Gahz'rilla Item from Gahz'rilla Preparation: In Gadgetzan, pick up "Scarab Shells" from Tran'rek, "Troll Temper" from Trenton Lighthammer, and "Divino-matic Rod" from Chief Engineer Bilgewizzle. In Dustwallow Marsh, visit Tabetha (a short distance north of the words "Stonemaul Ruins" on the map) to pick up "Tiara of the Deep". At the Shimmering Flats racetrack, pick up "Gahz'rilla" from Wizzle Brassbolts. (These quests can be shared. If you have "Tabetha's Task", you will have to ditch it before someone can share "Tiara of the Deep" with you.) In Aerie Peak, pick up "Witherbark Cages" from Gryphon Master Talonaxe. Complete it and its successor "The Altar of Zul". You will then receive "Thadius Grimshade"; travel to Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands and speak to Thadius Grimshade to receive "Nekrum's Medallion". In Steamwheedle Port, pick up "Screecher Spirits" from Yeh'kinya, and go to Ferelas to complete it. Then speak to Yeh'kinya again to pick up "The Prophecy of Mosh'aru". Notes: To the east of the first fork, in a cave, is Antu'sul the Overseer of Sul, a loot boss. He triggers fairly far from the cave mouth, so be careful. His fight starts with a bunch of weak basilisks (AOEable). Antu'sul drops earthgrab totems, which present at tactical difficulty, and also summons a steady stream of 48 elite basilisks, each of which has a stun attack. It's a difficult fight for a level-appropriate group. ------------------------------------------------- Instance: The Temple of Atal'Hakkar (Level 50-55) ------------------------------------------------- *[50] Into The Temple of Atal'Hakkar Collect 10 Atal'ai Tablets *[51] Into the Depths Find Altar of Hakkar *[51] Secret of the Circle Solve statue puzzle *[52] Haze of Evil Collect 5 Atal'ai Haze *[53] Jammal'an the Prophet Item from Jammal'an *[53] The God Hakkar Item from Hakkar [55] The Essence of Eranikus Place essence in Essence Font Preparation: Visit the Atal'ai Exile in the Hinterlands (due south of the Qual'Danil Lodge, as far as you can go) to pick up "Jammal'an the Prophet". (This quest can be shared.) In the Explorer's Guild in the southeast corner of the Dwarven District of Stormwind, visit Brohann Caskbelly to pick up "In Search of the Temple". Then visit the instance entrance and return to Brohann to pick up "To the Hinterlands". Travel to the Hinterlands to finish this quest and its two successors to get "Rhapsody's Kalimdor Kocktail". Travel to Ferelas and Tanaris to complete this quest, then return to the Hinterlands to get "Rhapsody's Tale". Return to Brohann Caskbelly to get "Into the Temple of Atal'Hakkar". At Marshal's Refuge In the Un'Goro crater, visit Muigin to pick up "Muigin and Larion". Complete this quest to obtain "A Visit to Gregan", and then speak to Gregan Brewspewer in Ferelas (in the southeastern part of the northwestern area of the mainland) to obtain "Haze of Evil". In Feathermoon Stronghold in Ferelas, speak to Angelas Moonbreeze to get "The Sunken Temple". Travel to Tanaris and speak to Marvon Rivetseeker (south of Gadgetzan in some empty ruins) to get "The Stone Circle". Travel to Ratchet to retrieve the stone circle, and return to Marvon Rivetseeker to get "Into the Depths" and "Secret of the Circle". Complete "The Prophecy of Mosh'Aru" in Zul'Farrak and the follow-up "The Ancient Egg" from Yeh'kinya in Steamwheedle to get "The God Hakkar". Notes: The order of the statues for "Secret of the Circle" is always the same: south, north, southwest, southeast, northwest, northeast. ---------------------------------------- Instance: Blackrock Depths (Level 52-59) ---------------------------------------- *[52] Overmaster Pyron Kill Overmaster Pyron *[52] Dark Iron Legacy Item from Fineous Darkvire *[53] Ribby Screwspigot Item from Ribbly [54] The Love Potion Collect items from outside instance *[54] Marshal Windsor Speak with Marshal Windsor [54] Abandoned Hope Return to Marshal Maxwell *[55] Hurley Blackbreath Item from Hurley Blackbreath *[55] The Heart of the Mountain Ground item in instance [56] Incendius! Kill Lord Incendius *[56] The Good Stuff Collect 20 Dark Iron Fanny Packs *[58] A Taste of Flame (part 2) Item from Bael'Gar [58] A Crumpled Up Note Speak with Marshal Windsor [58] A Shred of Hope Items from Angerforge and Argelmach *[59] Kharan Mighthammer Find Kharan Mighthammer [59] The Bearer of Bad News Speak with King Magni in Ironforge [59] The Fate of the Kingdom Kill Dagran Thaurissan [59] The Princess's Surprise Speak with King Magni in Ironforge *[60] Attunement to the Core Ground item near Molten Core entrance Preparation: In the Burning Steppes, north of the ruins of Thaurissan, speak to Yuka Screwspigot to get "Ribby Screwspigot". Also here, speak to Maxwort Uberglint to get "The Heart of the Mountain". In the southeast of the Burning Steppes, speak to Jalinda Spring to get "Overmaster Pyron", and to Oralius to get "The Good Stuff". In Kharanos in Dun Morogh, speak to Ragnar Thunderbrew to get "Hurley Blackbreath". (These quests can be shared.) In the southeast of the Burning Steppes, speak to Helendis Riverhorn to obtain "Dragonkin Menace". Complete this quest to get "The True Masters". Follow this chain (travel to Lakeshire, travel to Stormwind, travel to Lakeshire, travel back to the southeast of the Burning Steppes, go to the cave north to the Ruins of Thaurissan, return to Morgan's Vigil in the southeast) to get "Marshal Windsor". In the northeast of the Burning Steppes, inside a cave, speak to Cyrus Therepentous to get "A Taste of Flame" (part 1). If you have done the quest chain from Kalaran Windblade in the Searing Gorge and have the Black Dragonflight Molt, you can present it now; otherwise, you can speak to Cyrus again, fight a level 54 elite dragon, and get the dragonflight molt that way. Present the molt to Cyrus to get "A Taste of Flame" (part 2). In Ironforge, in The High Seat where the dwarven king lives, speak fo Royal Historian Archesonus to get "The Smoldering Ruins of Thaurissan" (part 1). Speak to the historian again and listen to her story, then complete the quest to get "The Smoldering Ruins of Thaurissan" (part 2). Go to the Ruins of Thaurissan and collect twelve items of information and return to Archesonus. Then speak to the dwarven king to get "Kharan Mighthammer". While dead, enter Blackrock Mountain and travel down the chain towards Blackrock Depths. In the middle of Forgewright's Tomb, speak to the ghost of Franclorn Forgewright to get "Dark Iron Legacy". Notes: After you finish "Overmaster Pyron" (which doesn't require entering the instance proper), you can return to Jalinda Spring to get "Incendius!". Completing "Kharan Mighthammer" allows you to get "The Fate of the Kingdom". Although there's plenty of quest content in the 52-55 range for this instance, the mobs come in pretty big groups. So you probably can't make much headway without a party in the high 50s or a raid group. Talk to Scholar Runethorn in Feathermoon Stronghold to get "Elven Legends". Talk to Pusillin in the east of Ferelas (at the pavilion northeast of Camp Mojache) to get "Pusillin and the Elder Azj'Tordin". In the Moonglade, speak to Rabine Saturna to get the quest "A Reliquary of Purity". You must have entered any wing of Dire Maul at some time in the past before Rabine will speak to you (but I believe someone else can share the quest with you if you haven't). Carry out this quest in Silithus and return to get "Shards of the Felvine". It is possible to pick up the shard for "Shards of the Felvine" without having the quest, but if you do, make sure not to combine the reliquary and the shard before you have turned in "A Reliquary of Purity". ----------------------------------- Instance: Scholomance (Level 58-63) ----------------------------------- *[58] Plagued Hatchlings Kill 20 Plagued Hatchlings [58] Healthy Dragon Scale Bring scale to Betina *[60] Barov Family Fortune Ground items *[60] Doctor Theolen Krastinov, the Butcher Kill Doctor Theolen Krastinov [60] Krastinov's Bag of Horrors Item from Jandice Barov [60] Kirtonos the Herald Kill Kirtonos the Herald [63] The Lich, Ras Frostwhisper Item from Ras Frostwhisper Preparation: You need a rogue with 250 lockpicking or a key to get into this instance (or for someone with a key to be nearby). To get the key, speak to Commander Ashlam Valorfist at Chillwind Point. Complete the quests "Clear the Way" and "All Along the Watchtowers", and then follow the quest chain starting with "Scholomance". You will need to pay 15 gold to finish the quest chain. In Chillwind Point, speak to Weldon Barov to get "Barov Family Fortune". At Light's Hope Chapel, speak to Betina Bigglezink to get "Plagued Hatchlings". (These quests can be shared.) In Caer Darrow just outside Scholomance, speak with Eva Sarkhoff (she won't have an exclamation point over her head until you listen to her story) to get "Doctor Theolen Krastinov, the Butcher". This quest can be shared, but only with people who have already spoken with Eva. Notes: Finishing Eva's quest chain gets you a trinket which allows you to see other ghosts on Caer Darrow, which in turns gets you the quest "The Human, Ras Frostwhisper", which begins a chain which leads to "The Lich, Ras Frostwhisper". --------------------------------------- Instance: Blackrock Spire (Level 58-63) --------------------------------------- Blackrock Spire is divided into two parts. The lower part is designed for a five-person party and contains dungeon quests, although some of the quests can be done in raid groups anyway; the upper part requires a key to unlock (obtained through multiple runs on the lower part) and is designed for fifteen-person raid groups. Lower Blackrock Spire: *[58] The Final Tablets Ground items [59] Bijou's Belongings Ground item *[59] Kibler's Exotic Pets Capture worg pups *[59] En-Ay-Es-Tee-Why Collect 15 spire spider eggs [59] Message to Maxwell Deliver message to Marshall Maxwell *[59] Put Her Down Kill Halcyon *[??] Mother's Milk Get poisoned by Mother Smolderweb [60] Urok Doomhowl Item from Urok Doomhowl [60] Seal of Ascension (part 1) Items from various named mobs [61] Seal of Ascension (part 2) Item from Emberstrife [61] General Drakkisath's Command Give letter to Marshal Maxwell Upper Blackrock Spire: *[60] Blackhand's Command Ground item behind General Drakkisath *[60] Eye of the Emberseer Item from Pyroguard Emberseer *[60] Doomrigger's Clasp Ground item *[60] Egg Freezing Freeze a dragon egg [60] Egg Collection Collect 8 dragon eggs *[61] The Demon Forge (armorsmith?) Give item to Malyfous in Winterspring [63] General Drakkisath's Demise Kill General Drakkisath *[63] Drakefire Amulet Item from General Drakkisath Preparation for Lower Blackrock Spire: If you are raiding LBRS, the only quest you probably care about is "Kibler's Exotic Pets", since that can be done in a raid. (You can do "Mother's Milk" in a raid, but it's actually very obnoxious to do at all; you have to stop about halfway through and return to Flame Crest.) If you are not raiding, here are the full preparation instructions: At Flame Crest in the Burning Steppes (north of the ruins of Thaurissan), speak to Kibler to get "Kibler's Exotic Pets" and "En-Ay-Es-Tee-Why", and speak to Ragged John to get "Mother's Milk". At Morgan's Vigil in the Burning Steppes (in the southeast), speak to Helendis Riverhorn to get "Put Her Down". "En-Ay-Es-Tee-Why" can be shared. Complete "The Prophecy of Mosh'aru" in Zul'Farrak, and the follow-up quests "The Ancient Egg" and "The God Hakkar" from Yeh'kinya in Steamwheedle. Then complete "The Lost Tablets of Mosh'aru" from Prospector Ironboot in Steamwheedle to get "The Final Tablets". Preparation for Upper Blackrock Spire: At Morgan's Vigil in the Burning Steppes, speak to Mayara Brightwing to get "Doomrigger's Clasp". At Flame Crest in the Burning Steppes, speak to Tinkee Steamboil to get "Egg Freezing". It is probably necessary to complete the quest chain "Broodling Essence" first (requires a trip to Winterspring). "Doomrigger's Clasp" can be shared. Complete "Dragonkin Menace" in The Burning Steppes and its long chain of follow-ups (including "Marshal Windsor" in Blackrock Depths) to eventually get "Drakefire Amulet". In Azshara, speak to Duke Hydraxis on one of the eastern islands, and complete his quests to get "Eye of the Emberseer". If you are an armorsmith with sufficient skill (probably about 285), talk to Lorax in Winterspring to get "The Demon Forge". Just down the hall from the Blackrock Spire instance entrance (outside the instance), kill the Scarshield Quartermaster to receive a letter which begins the quest "Blackhand's Command". ---------------------------------- Instance: Stratholme (Level 60-62) ---------------------------------- *[60] Of Love and Family Scarlet side *[61] The Great Fras Siabi Scarlet side *[61] Houses of the Holy Both sides *[61] The Archivist Scarlet side *[61] The Flesh Does Not Lie Both sides *[61] The Restless Souls Scarlet side [61] The Active Agent Baron side *[62] Menethil's Gift Baron side [62] The Truth Comes Crashing Down Scarlet side (obtained) [62] Above and Beyond Baron side Preparation: At Light's Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands, speak to Smokey LaRue to get "The Great Fras Siabi", to Leonid Barthalomew to get "Houses of the Holy", to Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff to get "The Archivist", and to Betina Bigglezink to get "The Flesh Does Not Lie". Speak to Caretaker Alen here to get "The Restless Souls", and follow up with Egan near Stratholme to get the Stratholme part of that quest. Complete Eva's quest chain in Scholomance in order to get "The Human, Ras Frostwhisper" from Magistrate Marduke. Follow this quest chain to get "Menethil's Gift". In the far northeast of the western plaguelands, at the north end of the river on the east bank (technically this is in the eastern plaguelands), speak to Tirion Fordring. Do all of his quests and follow-ups (it will take a while) to get "Of Love and Family". -------------------------------- Instance: Molten Core (Level 60) -------------------------------- *[60] The Molten Core [60] Hands of the Enemy Preparation: Complete "Attunement to the Core" in Blackrock Depths to gain access to the Molten Core. In Azshara, speak to Duke Hydraxis on one of the eastern islands, and complete his quests (including "Eye of the Emberseer" in Blackrock Spire) to get "The Molten Core". Obtain Honored reputation with the Hydraxian Warlords to get "Hands of the Enemy". You can get reputation by doing the other Hydraxis quests, by grinding elementals in Silithus (only works up to partway through Friendly), by killing the Emberseer in Blackrock Spire, and by killing monsters in the Molten Core.
