Science Olympiad
A High School Experience
I was a member of the Forest Hills Central High School Science Olympiad team starting as a freshman. We made it to nationals each year I was involved and I competed every year except freshman in all levels of competition (regional, state, national). Science Olympiad is unlike other forms of team science competitions as there are 15 competing members and usually 25 different events with 1-3 competitors per team per event. This requires that team members specialize in at least 2 events and be able to substitute for a third. I competed in three main events:
- Mission Possible - A 3 person engineering event to build a Rube-Goldberg type device that uses as many energy forms as possible. Highest Award: 1st Place Nationals (2000)
- Physics Lab - A 2 person combined question and lab practical that covers mechanics, energy conversion, and electricity/electronics. Highest Award: 3rd Place Nationals (2000)
- Road Scholar - A 2 person topography/cartography event. Highest Award: 1st Place State (1999,2000)
