MIT presents Town Gown to Cambridge

University leaders oppose vague secrecy level in scientific research

University leaders have criticized government proposals designed to establish a vague new level of secrecy in scientific research. They told a Congressional committee that labeling some university research as "sensitive" but not "classified" could be counterproductive to development of new scientific discoveries and economic growth.

Bush names Vest to advisory post

MIT President Charles M. Vest has been appointed to President George W. Bush's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).

Vest served on President Bill Clinton's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology from 1993 to 2001.

Governor-elect Mitt Romney has appointed a senior lecturer in the MIT Sloan School of Management to serve as Massachusetts secretary for environmental affairs.

Nearly half of all US presidential science advisors have had ties to the Institute

MIT, the host for yesterday's 25th anniversary celebration of the creation of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, has many links to presidential science advisors.

Walter L. Milne

Walter L. Milne, 80, who played a key role over four decades as an aide to six MIT presidents and helped develop many Cambridge institutions as MIT's liaison to the city, died at his Cambridge home on Dec. 23 of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
