Shopping, Restaurants, etc...:

Central Square is the closest shopping area to MIT.  It's about a 10 minute walk up Mass Ave. from Green Hall.  

The Cambridge Side Galleria is the mall near MIT.  It's a good 20 minute walk from Green Hall but there is also a free shuttle bus from the Kendall T-Stop

Newbury Street in Boston is lined with many shops--many are upscale, but some are reasonable for even grad students.  There are numerous cafes and restaurants along its length as well.

Harvard Square is also a good area for shopping and hanging out.  It's about a 30 minute walk up Mass Ave. but the bus and T (Harvard Square stop) stop there as well. 

Downtown Crossing in Boston is another popular shopping area.  It is also located near several of Boston's historic landmarks.  The best way to get there is by taking the T to the Downtown Crossing stop.
