Fall 2001 - Spring 2002 General Info
Rooms: Green Hall is dormitory in style and houses 46 graduate women students in 32 single (one person) and 7 double (two person) rooms. Residents are assigned rooms through our in-house lottery with priority given to residents with seniority. All rooms are furnished with twin long bed, desk, chair, lamp, chest of drawers, bureau (& an inbuilt closet) and bookcase. You must provide linens and study lamps. Commitment to a space in Green Hall is for the nine month academic year (September through May) with an option to stay for the summer. The cost for room is by month and will be included on your Bursar's bill.
Room rents: Singles: $494/month Government: Students comprise the House Government that has charge of house activities, room assignments and relations with the Administration. Participation by new residents and suggestions are always welcome. A House Tax is charged to each resident to support House Programs. This charge is determined by the House Executive Committee and billed with your room charge through the Bursar's Office. Locked Out: If you get locked out of your room during the day Maria has a master key and so does Jon. There is also a key box available at Baker House desk where you can check out your room key between 7:30AM and 1AM. If it is after business hours, Soosan also has a master key, but don't bother her after 10PM. On weekends and after 4pm on weekdays you can call Physical Plant (x3-1500) and they will page the housing person on duty. Your final option is Campus Police (x3-1212) who have keys to everything. No charge is incurred for lockouts. Parking stickers: Green Hall is allocated about 10 parking stickers that will be distributed by seniority (calculated the same way as for room assignments). You have to prove that it is your car (or your parent's car). The stickers are for Westgate lot which is down by Tang; there are also some spots available on the street, next to McCormick. The cost is $390, payable to the Campus Police parking division (W31 second floor). A sign-up sheet is posted by the mailboxes at the beginning of the fall term. Details will be listed on this sheet. Questions about parking should be directed to Christine Ng or see http://web.mit.edu/parking/student-parking.html. Those people requiring medical permits should contact Dr. Goldstein's office at the Medical Center and any other special requests should be directed to the Office of the Dean for Student Affairs. Facilities: We share gym facilities with Ashdown House down the street. You can check out the gym key at the Ashdown desk during desk hours. You must tell them you are a Green Hall resident. In the basement lounge, we have a closet with movies, CDs, games, and some books. You can check the key out from any one of the officers. Please see the Green Hall web page for rules, procedures, and a listing of available items. We also have a music system for the dorm that will be used for official parties. A sewing machine is also available for check-out. Some of the facilities of Baker House are also available to Green Hall residents, such as the dining room, roof-deck, game room, and music room. The key to these facilities can be checked out at Baker desk. You need your ID to check out the key, and Baker House rules apply when any Baker House facilities are used. In addition, Baker has a dining facility where dinner is served from 5pm to 8pm Monday through Thursday. They also have a well-supplied snack-bar/store open from 8pm to 2am. Mail: The mail gets sorted by Maria during the week, but on Saturday morning (and any other day Maria is not here but there is mail delivery) Jon will organize to have the mail sorted; if you are expecting packages you should contact the Baker front desk. If, for some reason, the mail doesn't get sorted, you can go get your mail from Baker. Please don't bring over all the mail and dump it on the desk because sometimes mail gets lost this way. Kitchens: Kitchen space, and kitchen usage are issues to be handled by each floor. Each floor receives $45 per semester to spend at their discretion on items they feel are necessary for their kitchen. Recycling: Recycling pick up is every Wednesday morning. The recycled items need to be taken over to the McCormick loading dock (right across from Green), any time after 4 PM on Tuesday and before 8 AM on Saturday. We can recycle newspaper, plastic (1's and 2's), glass, and metal in bins on each floor. We do not currently recycle white paper but we have a large box in the basement lounge to collect white paper for recycling at the Institute. Otherwise white paper is collected with other paper in the paper bins. For more information see our recycling page.Storage: There is a storage room in Green Hall for Green Hall residents. The key can be checked out from Soosan or the Baker desk. You need your ID to check out the key. There are bike racks in front of Green Hall. Please only put your bike here if you plan to use it. Otherwise, it should go in storage. Laundry: The laundry room is in the basement. It costs $0.75 to wash and $0.75 to dry. There is an ironing board down there too. We also have a sewing machine, which the housemasters have in their apartment. Cleaning: Vacuums, mops, etc: Garbage bags, brooms, dust pans, mops, and vacuum cleaners are available in the utility rooms. There aren't as many of these items as there are utility rooms so look on other floors if you can't find what you need on your floor. Return the items to any utility room as soon as you are done with them. We also have one grocery cart available for use, it is red and labeled “Green Hall.” Repairs / Complaints: You can report online any complaints you have with things like clogged drains, leaky faucets, stuck garbage disposals, window problems, malfunctioning smoke alarms, or sticky door locks. The URL for this is http://web.mit.edu/facilities/www/rlslp/. If it is a more immediate problem, see Jon Nolan during regular business hours, or call 3-1500 for the operations center or 100 for campus police. Computing: The study room, located in the basement, has a printer (W5-002) and an Athena quick station. Most of the residents have computers in their room. Each room has a network connection which requires an Ethernet card. See Computing Services at MIT for information on how to get started. Email List: To reach all the residents, including the housemasters and the house manager, e-mail the dorm mailing list at:
greenhall@mit.edu. Please use
discretion when emailing the entire dorm. When
in doubt, email the house officers first. To be added to the list, contact
the house officers at greenhall-officers@mit.edu.
