Lottery FAQ:
Q1) If I don't want to change rooms, do I still have to attend the lottery?
A1) No. :-) Green hall lottery operates by squatters' rights. This means, as the current resident of your room, you get to stay in your room
if you wish. No one can kick you out! Of course, you must have also:
1) turned in your summer housing application, if you wanted to stay in your room over the summer.
2) completed a renewal card for the following year, if you wanted to stay in your room beginning in the fall
(Note: This does not apply to residents who entered at the start of the spring term, these people are automatically renewed)
Q2) After the lottery, when are we going to move into our new rooms?
A2) The move isn't immediate. It really depends on when the occupant of the room
you want to move into can move out. The moving date is usually sometime at the end of finals near the end of may.
If the current resident in the room you are moving into is graduating, she is allowed to stay about 2 extra weeks, until JUNE 9 I believe
(basically until commencement ceremonies are over). So, when you actually move must be coordinated among yourselves, if you want to move earlier.
Of course, if you draw into a nice room for the Fall, but the current occupant of that room plans to stay
there in the summer, you cannot move until the Fall.
Q3)I see that my room, Room XYZ, is not on the availability list. Does it mean that I can't change my room?
(In other words, how is the room availibility list created?)
A3) No. the rooms listed are those that are guaranteed to be available, for instance if someone is not planning to stay over the summer, or
a resident is graduating and won't be around in the fall. Only after it is your turn and you choose the new room,
does your previous room get added to the availability list, and becomes open for lottery.
Q4) How does the lottery work?
A4) The lottery operates by seniority. Seniority is established on a points system. A resident gets 1 point for every semester in Green Hall
Officers get an extra 1/2 point per semester that they served as an officer. No points are given for the summer session.
All participants will draw a random card with a number on it (except for new
incoming residents). This is their lottery number. The person with the highest number of points gets to choose a room
first. If more than one person has the same number of points, we determine who goes next according to who has the lowest
lottery number.
We conduct the Lottery for Fall rooms before those for the Summer rooms.
Q5) Why is the Lottery for Fall rooms conducted before those for the Summer rooms?
A5) We do this because in the past, many residents have wanted to
first choose a room for the Fall, and then if possible, try to get the same room for the Summer. In this way, they can
move into their new room once and for all at the end of the semester.
If they could not get their desired room for the Summer, at least they can stay in their current room over the Summer
(as long as they submitted their summer housing applications on time) and not have the hassle of moving an extra time.
Q6) I want to lottery for a new room, but I have a group meeting at the time and cannot come. What should I do?
A6) In this case, you need to get a substitute (or "proxy") to lottery on your behalf. It is best if you can let me or one of the other officers know BEFORE THE LOTTERY. We can find a proxy for you if you need.
Also, you will need to supply your proxy with a preference list, ranking all the rooms that you care to move into, in the order you desire.
Note that you should rank ALL rooms in Green Hall that you care about (i.e. that you think are more desirable than your current room),
and NOT JUST THOSE on the availability list. This is because someone ahead of you may choose a new room,
after which their old room will becomes available to you). If a lot of the rooms are the same preference to you,
you can put them on one line (do whatever makes most sense to you):
(eg: 013, 113, 213, 313, 413 : #4 )
A list of rooms can be found by the mailboxes, or in the floor plans.
