Welcome to MIT!

GSC President: Oaz Nir
Welcome to MIT! I hope the year(s) ahead in graduate school are the most exciting, challenging, dynamic and above all, rewarding in your entire educational experience.
Chances are, you were originally attracted to the Institute because of its strong academic programs and international reputation for research. Now that you are here, you will enjoy and appreciate these strengths, but the MIT experience is more than classrooms and laboratories. Surprising to some, not all of us grad students spend all of our time on these pursuits. There’s a huge array of activities available for you to match just about any interest and meet brilliant fellow students while you’re at it. If I may offer a piece of advice: take advantage of this rich community that exists at MIT. Learn a new hobby, try an activity that you have never tried before, get involved in the larger fabric of the Institute. Your professional pursuits will occupy all your time if you let them, so make a conscious decision to experience some of the other strengths of MIT. Opportunities are everywhere.
One of the activities I highly recommend is the Graduate Student Council. The GSC’s goal is to enhance the overall graduate experience at MIT. Lobbying for subsidized health insurance, for a new dental program for grad students, the orientation to MIT that you are about to partake in, and the newly created Grad Gala to celebrate graduating students are just a few examples of what we contribute. Our dozen committee chairs and hundreds of volunteers are involved in many other projects, of course, and I hope you will take the time to come to a committee meeting or GSC activity that interests you. For a full picture of our efforts, please visit the GSC’s webpage at http://gsc.mit.edu; you will also find a Meetings Calendar there to make it easier to get involved.
Finally, I would encourage you to become a GSC representative for your department or program. Come to one of our monthly General Council Meetings (GCM’s take place in room 50-220 on the first Wednesday of each month at 5pm) to find out more and take part in enhancing the overall graduate experience.
Good luck with the year(s) ahead of you at MIT, and I look forward to meeting you in August!

Last year at the same time, when I was sitting at your place, I was wondering what will the life there be like and what I can get out of MIT. It seems that the answers are quite different for different people. The Dome embraces the wisdom of previous people; the Charles River exhibits the beauty of nature. On the same campus, on the same stage, there will be all kinds of wonderful perfomances on show, and that's all because you have brought your energy and uniqueness here. So please be prepared to start your adventure here and welcome to MIT!

As our Orientation logo goes, MIT is a maze, and is amazing! You will be amazed by the creativity embodied by the MIT hack culture, the strong flavor of entrepreneurship MIT endeavors to incubate, the endless free food you can get, and most of all, by the awesome people around you, from every corner of the world! And one day, you will be amazed by yourself, and by how far MIT has brought you to. It is during this time of year that MIT is rocked, by you. We are so thrilled to have you here, and are busy getting ready to be amazed by you!
