For more than three decades MIT has maintained a formal effort to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities and women in graduate study. (MIT defines underrepresented minority groups as African Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican Americans and Native Americans.) These efforts include targeted recruitment at institutions, conferences, meetings, and events nationwide, as well as participation in regional and national programs.
