At what point am I considered a graduate student? Are there any exceptions?
A student is considered to be a graduate student when he or she enrolls in a graduate degree granting program.
For students enrolled in five year M.Eng. programs at MIT, the fifth year (terms nine and ten) is considered as the graduate year. Therefore, you are registered as a graduate student beginning in your ninth term, with the attendant rights and responsibilities of graduate students.
