Will I be charged tuition during the summer session?

In order to reduce the cost to faculty researchers of supporting a graduate student, the Provost decided to provide a 100 percent summer term tuition subsidy. It does not apply to students in professional degree programs (for example, M.B.A., CRED, M.Eng. with the exception of Course 6). Rather, it applies to students who are registered for thesis research or for approved pre-thesis courses that have been identified in advance by departments. Those who register for any other courses will be charged tuition at the normal rate.

If a student registered full time for thesis in the preceding spring term continues for the summer, the tuition subsidy applies. Thus, there is no tuition penalty for those whose thesis completion slips past the spring semester. The subsidy does not apply to those who were not registered, or who were withdrawn, or in nonresident status, for the preceding spring term and return to complete the thesis in the summer.

When I'm only registered for thesis (or for one course), why am I charged full tuition?

Tuition is not charged on the basis of administrative services accessed or faculty time used. Rather, as long as you are registered in normal, full time student status, full tuition is charged. However, the amount that you actually owe in your final term may be prorated by the Registrar, based on the date on which your thesis is accepted (i.e., signed) by your department or degree granting program. Consult the Registrar's tuition proration table to review the tuition proration schedule for the term.
