Purpose
Because the Sloan PhD programs are small and the students are spread across several different disciplines, there has not been a strong sense of community among the graduate students. Our goal was to take a first step toward creating a Sloan PhD community by creating a resource which addresses the issues specific to Sloan PhD students.
Impact
The handbook was written, typeset, and edited between November 2004 and June 2005. In June 2005, electronic copies of the handbook were distributed to all incoming Sloan PhD students via email. Printed versions were distributed to all first-year students and interested upperclass students in September of 2005. The handbook was well-received, and the Sloan PhD office has lent its support to its continued publication. We believe that this project has encouraged increased interaction among Sloan Students, and we hope that the handbook will continue to be updated and published annually in the future.
"Although there are other general graduate student handbooks available, the Sloan handbook has information that is most relevant and useful for Sloan students, and that is why I found it to be most useful." – Mary Tian, Financial Economics
"I found the handbook to be a great resource for both moving into the area and getting settled at Sloan. I really appreciated the effort that went into it." – Nathan Fong, Marketing
"The Sloan PhD handbook was incredibly helpful when I first arrived on campus. I don't know how I would have figured everything out without it. There were so many questions I had when I first arrived that were covered in it, so I was relieved to receive it." – Chuck Eesley, Technological Innovation & Entrepreneurship
