Building Community Through Service Learning

2003 through 2006
Amy Banzaert
Service Learning Coordinator, Alumna

Purpose

To help graduate students form and solidify these connections, we propose two initiatives centered around the service learning initiative:

  1. an enhanced public service design lecture series to expand graduate student access to information about community-based invention and research, and to develop graduate student networking opportunities by enhancing the social context for the lectures and
  2. a system of graduate student service learning brainstorming workshops and a working group to enable graduate students to share ideas, work in multidisciplinary teams, and teach using service learning.

Impact

The project enabled the Service Learning Initiative ("SLI") to enhance the Public Service Design Seminars and lecture offerings. Special attempts were made to include graduate students in these events, and to use these events as a mechanism for building community within the graduate student body. Funding also made possible service learning brainstorming workshops for graduate students. The sessions brought graduate students together around important issues and educated the SLI about the special needs and interests of the graduate community.
