List of Characters

Women

  • Princess Zara (soprano): Eldest daughter of King Paramount. She has received an English education and is eager to see her native land remodeled to resemble England. It is she who brings the Flowers of Progress to Utopia. Unlike her father, she is quite assertive and confident.
  • Princess Nekaya (soprano) and Princess Kalyba (mezzo-soprano or soprano): The two younger daughters of King Paramount. Though they are native Utopians, they have been raised as paragons of English refinement. They are both very young and naive.
  • Lady Sophy (contralto): The English governess to the two younger princesses. It is her job to make sure that Nekaya and Kalyba conform to the English ideals of maidenhood. Like many G&S contraltos, Lady Sophy is a middle-aged spinster. She has remained unwed because she has never found the man she holds as her ideal: a blameless king, like those of fairy lore. It is her wish that Paramount will prove himself worthy.
  • Phylla (soprano), Salata and Melene: Utopian maidens. Phylla has one solo in the opening song. Salata has two spoken lines and Melene has one.

Men

Imported "Flowers of Progress"

To anyone interested in the roles of Scaphio, Phantis, Captain FitzBattleAxe and Princess Zara

The production staff is planning on making some cuts to the show that would specifically affect these four roles. The plan is to eliminate the sub-plot in which Scaphio and Phantis vie for the hand of Princess Zara. This would result in the elimination of a duet for Scaphio and Phantis ("Let all you doubts take wing" ), the quartet ("It's understood I think, all 'round") and the duet for Zara and FitzBattleAxe which immediately follows ("Oh admirable art"), as well as the two dialogue sequences which precede these songs. These cuts affect Act I only.
