Soup Kitchen Service
Turnout was a little small, but we made up in quality what we lacked in quantity. Besides myself, there was Franco Capaldi An undergrad from MIT also came, but her name escapes me... I'm terrible with names. We had a good time talking with some of the staff and others about their stories and ended up buying lunch for quite a few people. At last count, I believe we had served at least 44 people... not a bad total for the day. -Dav I think we had the biggest turnout of people for the whole deal (i.e. from the start of cooking onwards) we've ever had. Qu'est ce qu'on dit, "le menu" was a fajita-esque chicken stir fry w/ peppers & LOADS of onions (and I thought all the tears were for my motivational speech!); rice; and banana split sundaes. The clients enjoyed being served at their tables (as opposed to usually lining up routine), and I know Ralph (the cook) really apprec. the help, plus hanging out w/ us over lunch afterwards. The chefs/waiters were: Ken Lau * Thanks to those who showed up... espec. the 2 newbies (*). -Chris Thanks to: Aaron Thode (newbie) for helping out at the Salvation Army shelter last Saturday. Turnout was lower than in the past, but our efforts were clearly appreciated. I likewise apologize for any loss of rhythm you may have experienced due to exposure to KISS 108... I have no say over what gets played in the kitchen. -Chris Admittedly, I was a little worried up to the day, especially b/c w/ my work sending me through the meat grinder, I had little time to make phone calls etc. In the end, we had a pretty decent size turnout... even moreso if measured in energy rather than headcount. I REALLY appreciate those who turned out for the soup kitchen service at the Salvation army last Saturday. Despite the heat, Afterwards we chilled out w/ some of the shelter staff over lunch. Good times all around... Audrey and Caroline so much so that they started planning for return trips. BTW, the Salv. Army DOES take walk-ons for lunch service 7 days a week, and I or Sanjay (who goes more frequently than I) would be happy to introduce you around if you've never been there but want to try some no-commitment vol. work as your schedule permits. Thanks again to all who braved the heat in the kitchen and turned out last Saturday! - Chris 7/8/99 Thanks to the following folks who served up a storm at the Salvation Army Shelter soup kitchen on Saturday the 8th: Jennifer Chin, Michael Gordon, Gloria George (our non-MIT designated hitter), Jingfeng Wang (is there a vol. activity this guy won't do?), Maryam Rahimi, Jamie Porter (in his debut performance), Yanyuan Ma (graduating... GONGXI GONGXI!), Janice Lee, Robert David (stealth force... as per his "Where's Waldo" appearance way in the back of the Cambridge Student Outreach photo), Wungkum Fong (who's now "been there, done that" for each of our 1st semester projects) & the usual suspects (Sanjay, Yanqing, and I). The menu this time included baked chicken, fresh salad, garlic bread, steak fries, made-to-specs. ice cream sundaes w/ incandescent blueberry topping, and a rice curry concoction best left undescribed (hey, I'm MacGuyver, not Julia Childs!). THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN ANY OR ALL 4 EVENTS OF OUR INAUGURAL SEMESTER. No need for the "high school soccer coach on an inspirational speech" routine, nor for a sappy rendition of "Lean on Me" w/ the whole holding hands & swaying thang, but I sincerely hope we can continue the good work. Y'all should take pride in your efforts this past semester. 'nuff said... grab a hankie, blow your nose, and get back to work. Afterwards, we chilled out & discussed past & future events over lunch w/ Steve from the Shelter staff. - Chris A. Spohr
In addition to the three officers, we had 6 other MIT graduate students helping out: not too shabby considering this was during "spring break" (we used to know what that term meant). Thanks go out to Sham Sokka, Jennifer Chin, Payman Kassaei, Mike Gordon, Maryam Rahimi, and Soosan Beheshti. We were particularly pleased and impressed w/ our first GSVC outing, especially by the efforts of 4 of our group who'd never previously volunteered at the soup kitchen: this was key given that a few of our group had conflicts come up and couldn't attend. Thanks for all who showed up, many of whom returned for the final event of the semester (see above). GSVC |
