

Alexander Brown works on the history and culture of engineering and technology, with a focus on the history of the US space program. His dissertation is entitled "Rooted in History and Culture: Accidents and Engineering at NASA, 1967–2003". The dissertation examines engineering and safety cultures at NASA from 1967 to the present, through the lens of the three major accidents at NASA: Apollo 1 in 1967, Challenger in 1987 and Columbia in 2003. He is also interested in science and technology policy, the history of computing and software, and the history and cultures of aerospace.
He teaches in the Political Science Department of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
