Anita Chan

Anita Chan is examining free software movements in Latin America , with a particular focus on the Peruvian movement to legislate the use of free software in government. She has been interested in looking at how free software proponents in Latin America work to translate the language of free software with its emphasis on user rights, into a broader discourse around government relations and citizen rights. And she has been interested in studying the processes and dynamics behind the international networks of exchange between state officials, and free software proponents in and outside Latin America. Her fieldwork is currently being supported by a NSF doctoral dissertation research improvement grant. And her articles have appeared in the journals Anthropological Quarterly and La Revista Iberoamericana de Comunicacion.
