PARTNER:

 James works in the field of sustainable aviation as a research engineer within the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology. He is an investigator for the Partnership for AiR Transporation Noise and Emissions Reduction (PARTNER), a leading aviation cooperative research organization, and an FAA/NASA/Transport Canada-sponsored Center of Excellence. His work focuses on modeling the environmental impact of aviation as well as the use of alternative fuels for aviation.

JPDO NextGen:

 As a member of PARTNER, James also works with the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) to help in the creation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). He chairs the Science and Metrics Panel of the Environmental Integrated Product Team (EIPT). The panel focuses on advancing science to better understand the environmental impact of aviation and using this science-based knowledge to create metrics that relate aviation to health and welfare impacts. The work includes reducing the uncertainty of aviation impacts on local water quality and climate change while advancing science related to noise, local air quality, supersonic transport, alternative fuels, and related matters.

Silent Aircraft Initiative:

 James was co-chief engineer for the Silent Aircraft Initiative, a collaboration between Massachussetts Institute of Technology and Cambridge University. The Silent Aircraft project had the bold aim of discovering ways to reduce aircraft noise dramatically, to the point where it would be virtually unnoticeable to people outside the airport perimeter in a typical built-up area.

Jet Noise Research:

 James received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 2004. His dissertation focused on the generation of noise by large turbulence structures within a high-speed jet. The experiments presented therein show the intimate relationship between the dynamics of turbulence and the creation of sound. His work is the first to visualize the time evolution of large turbulence during the creation of sound within a high Reynolds number, high-speed jet. This research was conducted at the Gas Dynamics and Turbulence Laboratory.
