MIT SUKKAH DESIGN CONTEST???
THE SUKKAH WILL NOT FALL AGAIN!
What's happening?
After a 50 mph wind whipped through Kresge Oval mid-week of Sukkot, damaging the new pre-fab sukkah erected there for the week-long holiday, MIT Hillel returned to a formerly used, similarly pre-fabricated, sukkah. Both of these cannot compare to the now worn-out beautiful and unique sukkah designed in the early 1990s by (then) graduate students Tzviyah Rosenstock G'93 & Avigail Shimshoni G'92 and used at MIT for over a decade. (see The Tech article http://tech.mit.edu/V112/N50/sukkah.50n.html)
Knowing that MIT of all places should have a unique sukkah, MIT Hillel has announced a "MIT Sukkah Design Contest" throughout this year. There are many technical details necessary for a sukkah to be "kosher"/valid. Adherence to those laws, and then utility in windy and cold weather, aesthetics and being uniquely MIT, will all be considerations in the contest. Interested in submitting a design? Questions about what's valid? Contact us at hillel@mit.edu.
