Will
Broadhead received his PhD in Ancient History in 2002 from
University College London. He specializes in the history
of Italy in the age of the Roman Republic, with a particular
interest in the period from the later 4th to the early 1st
century BC. In addition to the preparation of a book, based
on his dissertation, that examines the role of geographical
mobility in Italy and its impact on Rome’s efforts
to control the territory of the peninsula in the 3rd and
2nd centuries BC, he is also currently working on the Imagines
Italicae Project www.sas.ac.uk/icls/imaginesit/Default.htm,
based at the Institute of Classical Studies in London, whose
aim is to collect and publish photographs of and all known
contextual data relevant to the corpus of inscriptions in
the Sabellic languages.
Before moving to MIT in 2004, he taught in
the UK at University College London, Birkbeck College London,
and the Universities of Nottingham and Bristol. He has also
taught Roman topography at the British School in Rome and
has worked on archaeological excavations in Tunisia and
Italy. At MIT, he teaches introductions to ancient Greece
and Rome as well as courses on ancient urbanism and ancient
and modern views of Roman emperors.
Will Broadhead is the recipient of the Jeptha H. and Emily V. Wade Fund for his project "Judging Caesar: Ancient and Modern Interpretations of Julius and Augustus Caesar."
