Christopher Leighton

Assistant Professor of History (On leave 2009 - 2010)

Christopher Leighton has a Ph.D. (2009) in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University. He specializes in modern Chinese history.

His dissertation explored the fate of capitalists and capitalism in the early People's Republic of China, and showed that capitalists became integral parts of the nascent socialist system. This unrecognized legacy facilitated China's transition back to capitalism in the 1980s. His research interests are in modern Chinese history and deal with the social dimensions of political change.

In 2009-2010, he will be a fellow at Stanford Univerisity's Center for East Asian Studies.
