David Ciarlo received his PH.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2003. His research interests include German cultural history, European imperialism, racism, and the genesis of mass culture. His teaching interests range widely, from the social and cultural history of Modern and Early Modern France, Britain, and Germany, to the history of southern Africa in the colonial and post-colonial eras. He is currently revising his dissertation, "Consuming Race, Envisioning Empire: Colonialism and German Mass Culture, 1887-1914," for publication.

German propaganda and advertising images from the 1890s to the 1920s that advocate colonialism, often through images of racial difference.
