ARRIVALS and DEPARTURES
The History Faculty is delighted to welcome Professor Christopher Leighton, Assistant Professor of History, who specializes in modern Chinese history. In 2009-2010 he will be on leave from MIT and will be a fellow at Stanford University's Center for East Asian Studies.
Our heartiest congratulations to Haimanti Roy and Rahul Nair on the birth of their son Karna.
Congratulations to David Ciarlo on his new position at the University of Cincinnati. We wish him every success.
AWARDS AND FELLOWSHIPS
The 2009 Bruce Mazlish Undergraduate Prize in History winners were Aubrey Samost who took First Prize for "Youngsters and their New-Fangled Gadgets: How Children in a Household Helped Spread Ownership of Radios; " Second Prize was shared by Sam Hollander for "Parthia and the Fall of the Republic" and Pall Kornmayer for "The Technology of Mercy: From the Gallows to the Chair."
Chris Capozzola won the 2009 James A. and Ruth Levitan Award for excellence in teaching in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
Anne McCants received the Elizabeth Topham Kennan Award for outstanding Educational achievement from the Mount Holyoke College Alumnae Association in May 2009.
Harriet Ritvo is the new President of the American Society for Environmental History.
Xaq Frolich and Rebecca Woods, students in the doctoral program in History, Anthropology, and Science, Technology, and Society received Fulbright Scholarships to pursue their dissertation research. Xaq is in Spain working on his topic, "Accounting for Taste: Regulating Food Labeling in the 'Affluent Society,' 1945-1995" and Rebecca is traveling to New Zealand for her topic "Bread to Purple: Imperial Livestock and Colonial Places."
FRESHMAN PRE-ORIENTATION PROGRAM
Discover History in Boston, our four-day introduction to historical resources in the Boston area, was organized by Chris Capozzola and Rebecca Woods and held August 25 through 28, with 17 participants.
IAP IN ANCIENT ITALY
IAP in Ancient Italy will be offered again in January 2010. MIT undergraduates and members of the MIT History Faculty will travel to Rome and the Bay of Naples for a first-hand experience of Roman and Greek archeology - urban topography, architecture, public and private monument. Dates and application forms will be posted on the History web site when they become available.
