HKN Underground Guide to VI-A

HP

Location: Boise, Idaho
Number of Respondents: 1

Hewlett-Packard Laserjet Imaging Solutions is located in suburban Boise, ID. Hewlett-Packard provides neither a housing subsidy nor assistance in finding housing in a tight housing market. Rent amounted to approximately $550 per month. The lone respondent lived 20 minutes from work and commuted by car.

As one might expect, the student found Boise to be somewhat boring and commented that it's "out in the middle of nowhere". Despite the fact that HP did not sponsor activities to bring its interns together, there was a significant amount of social interaction between the large number of interns after work. The working environment was described as very laid-back and the hours as very flexible, making it easy to get work done. Dress was casual. The student rated his co-workers moderately competent, and felt that he was treated with respect within the workplace. The student worked in a cubicle and had access to state-of-the-art equipment.

The respondent was in a group of ten, working on network protocol development. Their project was chosen by HP and was assigned before the beginning of the summer. Switching between different groups was difficult, and the company did not encourage such mobility. The respondent felt that his role in his group's work was minimal, although the work was challenging and personally interesting.

Hewlett-Packard paid for health and moving expenses, in addition to 5th term tuition. Salary seemed to be slightly below average for the West Coast.

Overall, the respondent loved Hewlett-Packard and his group, and would choose it again if given the chance. Although the student would like to work at HP after graduation, he expressed reservation about working at the Boise location.
