1999 Harvard-MIT Math Tournament Results
Here are the final results from the 1999 contest:
- Individual, Team, and Sweepstakes (overall) are lost, we'll put them online if we can find another copy.
- Individual, Team, and Sweepstakes (HMMT only)
Errata
Unfortunately we're not perfect, so there were a few mistakes. Here are a few corrections:
[Note: awards given at the awards ceremony are final.]
- Advanced Topics #9 is flawed because the mint has to produce 100% legitimate, correctly weighted coins for the numbers to work out, which contradicts the statement of the problem.
- Calculus #6 didn't specify degrees, but the more serious problem is that if you're working in degrees, then the derivative of sin x is (pi/180)cos x, not cos x.
- Calculus #8 is flawed because the problem does not specify how to choose a point randomly in the circle. If you use a uniform distribution, then the solution given is incorrect (it turns out to be something more like 3/2 - ln4).
- Guts Round #12 should have said positive integers. As stated, the answer is 2.
- Guts Round #16 should have stated that ABC is the equilateral triangle.
- Guts Round #20 should have specified that the bricks are 1 foot long.
- Team Round #7 should have used the same index for i and n.
