The Human-Machine Systems Laboratory (HMSL) is a research unit within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. It is a participant in the Center for Information-Driven Mechanical Systems and has close ties to other research groups at MIT. It is staffed by faculty, postdoctoral research fellows, graduate students, and visiting scientists and engineers from the US and abroad.
Its major theme is the cooperation of humans and computers in the control of vehicles and complex systems. Human-in-the-loop simulation experiments and mathematical modeling are the primary research methods used.
