Ashdown Highlights: Strong community: Ashdown House has a vibrant community with many social events throughout the year. More than half the residents are international students. Ashdown hosts a weekly Coffee Hour each Thursday evening, which typically has over 100 people in attendance. There are also monthly Sunday brunches, large parties, and various cultural events and outings throughout the year. Ashdown has more than 40 officers who take care of everything from parties to plants. Professor Terry Orlando and his wife Ann are the faculty in residence and provide many opportunities for the residents to get to know each other and are invaluable as sources of advice and counsel to individuals, both personally and academically. Ashown House Government: The Ashdown House Executive Committee (AHEC) is comprised of students who are elected by the residents. AHEC meets weekly to biweekly to discuss issues that are brought up by residents or MIT Administration. AHEC manages the internal room lottery and represents the dorm in meetings with MIT Administration. Participation by new residents is strongly encouraged. New ideas and suggestions for programs are always welcome. A House tax of $5 per month is charged to each resident to support House programs. This charge is determined by the AHEC and billed with your room charge through the Bursar's Office. Both the room charge and the house tax are reflected on your student account statement. If you have someone of the opposite sex that you prefer to share an apartment or suite with and you are both assigned to the same unit-type in the Graduate Housing Allocation, you may request to be assigned together. If you do not receive the same unit-type initially, after move-in you may enter any in-house lotteries to try to get a shared apartment, pending availability. Also, any future suitemates might be opposite sex if they are assigned to your suite after an in-house lottery. Single-sex only suites are available upon request.
