Furnished?: Yes [Introducing the New Ashdown House]
Furnished?: Yes [View W1 location on MIT Campus Map] [NW35 Typical unit Floorplans] MIT Certificates Required [Housing Policies & Regulations] [Introducing the New Ashdown House]
Ashdown House - NW35 - New Location In the summer of 2008 the heart and soul of the Ashdown House Community will be transplanted from its present location on Memorial Drive that it has occupied since 1933 (building W1), to a new facility located on the northwest side of the MIT campus at 235 Albany Street (building NW35). This new location is in within one block of MIT Graduate Houses Sidney-Pacific, the Warehouse, and Edgerton. Ashdown House is coed, meaning both male and female students live there. In general, apartments and suites are also coed, but single sex suites (female and male only) are available for students who prefer it. There will be several types of living situations in the new Ashdown House. Efficiencies are studio apartments for one person, including kitchen facilities and a private bathroom. Some of these are narrower than normal and will therefore cost slightly less per month. In 2 Bedroom Apartments two people will share an apartment with two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen facilities and a bathroom. In 3 Bedroom Apartments three people will share an apartment with three bedrooms, a living room, kitchen facilities and a bathroom. In 3 Bedroom Duplex Apartments, the layout is very similar to the 2 Bedroom Apartments with a third bedroom up a flight of stairs, in a "monitor" on the roof, as depicted in the photo above. In 3 Bedroom Suites three people will share an apartment with three bedrooms and a bathroom. These apartments are the same size as the 2-bedroom apartments, but with no living room or kitchen. These apartments are designed for the Graduate Student on a tight budget. All rooms are single occupancy. There will be no shared bedrooms. There will be apartments and suites specifically modified to accommodate disabled residents. All bedrooms will be furnished with a twin captain's bed, night stand, desk and hutch, chair, and wardrobe for each person. You must provide your own linens and study lamps. Common facilities will include four common floor lounges, four common floor kitchens, a television lounge, study lounges, a music practice room with piano, and another lounge with a grand piano. The dorm will have table tennis, foosball, and a pool table, along with an equipped exercise room. There will be space for meetings, private parties, and large events. There will lso be a fully equipped darkroom, laundry facilities, a student-run pub, two courtyards with barbeque facilities, a bike room, and a general storage room. Ashdown House subscribes to many newspapers and magazines that are available in the lounges. There will be public computers for checking email along with both black and white and color printers. Various items, such as movies and sports equipment, will be available for checkout by residents from the front desk. Because almost half the residents are international students, Ashdown has something of an international atmosphere. Professor Terry Orlando and his wife Ann are the faculty in residence and provide many opportunities for the residents to get to know each other and are invaluable as sources of advice and counsel to individuals, both personally and academically. The dorm is known for its social atmosphere. There are weekly Thursday evening Coffee Hours and biweekly Sunday brunches. In addition, there is usually one big party every semester and various floor outings and cultural events throughout the term. The various social events are taken care of by the House officers. Apart from putting on social events, officers take care of the aquarium and the plants, the darkroom, the printers, etc. There are usually more than 40 officers at any one time. Ashdown House Executive Committee (AHEC), the dorm government is comprised of students who are elected by the residents. AHEC meets weekly to biweekly to discuss issues that are brought up by residents or MIT Administration. AHEC manages the internal room lottery and represents the dorm in meetings with MIT Administration. Participation by new residents is strongly encouraged. New ideas and suggestions for programs are always welcome. A House tax of $5 per month is charged to each resident to support House programs. This charge is determined by the House Executive Committee and billed with your room charge through the Bursar's Office. Both the room charge and the house tax are reflected on your student account statement. Ashdown House - W1 - Current Location The current location of Ashdown House is on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Memorial Drive, directly across from MIT's main classroom, administrative buildings, the Student Center, and athletic facilities. This is an older building with spacious rooms. Restoration has preserved and enhanced the style and character of the building. It is dormitory in style and houses 360 single graduate men and women on 6 floors. Living arrangements in the current Ashdown House are divided into suite arrangements. Each suite contains a suite bathroom and usually 2-3 bedrooms. Residents will share the common kitchen located on each floor. There are suites and rooms specifically modified to accommodate disabled residents. All bedrooms are furnished with a twin long bed, desk, chair, bureau and bookcase for each person. You must provide your own linens and study lamps. There are both single and shared bedrooms called "doubles" (two people in one bedroom). In general, new students move into shared rooms. Single rooms are reserved for residents with seniority. Students win better shared rooms and singles through the internal house lottery based on seniority points. A resident gets a seniority point for each semester that he or she lives in the dorm and an additional seniority point for each semester that he or she serves as an officer. New residents will not be assigned a single unless it is medically or religiously warranted and documented. Ashdown House is coed, meaning both male and female students live there. In general, suites are also coed, but single sex suites (female and male only) are available for students who prefer it. Shared bedrooms to which new students are assigned are also single sex. Common facilities include six common floor kitchens, four television rooms, four study lounges, a music practice room with piano, and another lounge with a grand piano. The dorm has table tennis, foosball, and a pool table, along with an equipped exercise room. There is space for meetings, private parties, and large events. The basement contains a fully equipped darkroom, laundry facilities, and even a student-run pub. There is a bike room as well as a general storage room. Because Ashdown House is moving from its present location to the northwest side of campus in the summer-fall of 2008, commitment to space in Ashdown House at its current location on Memorial Drive is from the date of occupancy to June 14, 2008 for all residents who do not plan to move to the new building.
