I'm entering the Housing Allocation to get an assignment. How do I request a particular apartment-mate?

The request process is the same for both coed and single-sex requests.  You and your preferred apartment-mate must receive an assignment to the same room type in the same building. Please note that there is no guarantee that you and your preferred apartment-mate will receive the same assignment in the allocation.

After the results come out, you will be able to list each other as preferred apartment-mates on your room preference survey only if both of you receive an assignment to the same building and room type. Both parties should include each other's name and MIT ID number in the roommate request portion of the survey.  We must have a request in writing from both parties to be able to make an intentional apartment-mate assignment, regardless of gender.

How are Housing Allocation apartment-mate requests fulfilled?

If both parties receive an assignment to the same room-type in the same building, we will do our best to accommodate your request. Coed requests can be accommodated in 2-bedroom apartments in Edgerton, Tang Hall, and Sidney Pacific, and in all apartment types (except efficiencies) in Ashdown House. All other Graduate Housing apartments are single sex.

Please keep in mind that, while the majority of requests can be met, there are some limitations.  The buildings do not empty out completely over the summer. Therefore we are only able to assign people where there is vacancy.  For coed assignments, this means that there must be a completely empty 2-bedroom apartment (or 3-bedroom apartment/suite in Ashdown) available for you and your friend(s) to move in to.

I'm a current resident of Edgerton, Sidney Pacific, or Ashdown. How do I request a particular apartment-mate?

Edgerton, Sidney Pacific, and Ashdown hold annual in-house lotteries in early May for residents of these buidings who have assignments continuing into the fall term to choose rooms. These lotteries are announced and administrated by the House Government. Through this lottery there will be a way to indicate that you wish to live with someone in particular. If the House can accommodate the request, that is, if there is an available apartment for you to live in together, they will accommodate it.

Throughout the rest of the year the Graduate Housing Office maintains a waiting list of residents who wish to change rooms in Edgerton House and Sidney Pacific. You may complete an on-line transfer request form, and we will let you know if we are able to accommodate your request during the year. We must have a request in writing from both parties to be able to make an intentional roommate assignment, regardless of gender.

If you are a resident of Ashdown House and you wish to live with a particualr person or persons, you can participate in the next Ashdown In-House Room Assignments Lottery. For more details about any future lotteries please contact the Ashdown House Executive Committee (ahec@mit.edu). Please note that lottery assignments in Ashdown are based on seniority points earned through length of residency and/or service as an officer.

I'm a current resident of Tang. How do I request a particular apartment-mate?

At this time the Tang Hall Government has decided not to have an in-house lottery for students who have assignments continuing into the Fall term to choose rooms. If you wish to switch apartments for the Fall Term, please send email to graduatehousing@mit.edu between May 1 and May 12 requesting a new assignment. We must have a request in writing from both parties to be able to make an intentional apartment-mate assignment, regardless of gender.

Students who wish to switch rooms or apartments in Tang Hall at any time through the year may complete an on-line transfer request form indicating who they wish to live with. When an opening that fulfills your request becomes available, the Housing Office will let you know.

Can couples live in coed apartments in Single Housing?

Single housing is intended for use by single graduate students. However, the Housing Office will not ask, nor check, whether you are married, in a committed relationship, or otherwise involved.  If two members of a couple are assigned to the same roomtype in the same building, they may ask to be assigned as apartment-mates. They will each have their own license for their assigned room in the apartment and will each be responsible for the full house fees associated with their assignment. If a couple is interested in living with other couples and families, they should look at the options for Family Housing.

What if I don't want an apartment-mate of the opposite sex?

Co-ed assignments are only assigned if you indicate that you would prefer this option on your housing preference survey. If you do not wish to live in a co-ed apartment, you should not mark this option on your survey.

If you have any questions you would like to see in the Guide, please do not hesitate to contact us at graduatehousing@mit.edu.
