Graduate Housing Assignments — Fall 2009 Waiting List
Overview
The Graduate Housing Office offers a waiting list each term for graduate students, visiting students, researchers, and post-docs interested in on-campus family and single graduate housing. Please take a minute to read the below information on the waiting list process, eligibility, and graduate housing policies to decide if the waiting list option is right for you.
Waiting List Information
Eligibility
• The Graduate Housing waiting list is available for current graduate students, visiting students, and MIT post docs and visiting researchers who do not currently have an assignment in on-campus Graduate Housing.
• The Graduate Housing waiting list is not a mechanism to change assignments or for officers to secure continuing status. Students who already have on-campus housing will be removed from the waiting list.
• Applicants who did not receive housing in the November Allocation will automatically be entered on the waiting list for a spring term assignment.
Timeline of Assignments
• You should enter preferences here if you want housing for the Fall 2009 Term.
• If you want housing for the Spring 2010 Term please apply to the Graduate Housing Spring Allocation. This Allocation will open in early November, 2009.
• If you are in need of housing in December or January, please obtain a graduate housing sublicense. Spring waiting list assignments will often begin in early February.
Entering the Waiting List
• There are a wide variety of choices in MIT's Graduate and Family Housing system: http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/residences.html. Please be familiar with our offerings before applying to or accepting an assignment because not all options are appropriate for everyone and our cancellation and termination policies are very strict.
• Once you have reviewed the options, enter the waiting list by clicking on the appropriate links at the bottom of this page. Please apply only for where you want to live. If you apply to something and we offer that apartment type to you and you decline you will be removed from the waiting list.
• You must confirm your spot on the waiting list every two weeks. Your position on the waiting list will expire if it remains unconfirmed after two weeks. There is a simple web form you can use to confirm your place on the waiting list, and you will need your MIT ID number. Applicants on the waiting list whose positions expire are removed from the list.
How Offers are Made
• Offers from the waiting list are made in date-applied order for students. Applications will be added to the end of the list in the order in which they are received.
• Offers from the waiting list are held for approximately 5 days . You have approximately five days to respond to any offer you receive from the waiting list. Offers not responded to by the applicant after the deadline stated in your offer email will be assumed declined. The space will then be offered to the next applicant on the waiting list and the applicant assumed declined will be removed from the waiting list.
Accepting an Offer
• If you accept an assignment from the waiting list, it is a binding commitment and you will be expected to occupy the room regardless of whether you have signed your license.
• Graduate Housing's termination policies are very strict. Please be familiar with them before accepting an assignment: http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/ghg/gettingout.html
• There is no financial penalty for declining an offer from the waiting list, but you will be removed from the list. When we reach your place in the line, we will offer you whichever of your preferences is available. If you decline, there is no financial penalty but you will be removed from the list.
If you still want to be considered for on-campus housing after declining an offer you must reapply to the waiting list.
Penalties for Cancellation
• After accepting an offer from the waiting list, should you decide to cancel your assignment, you MUST notify the Graduate Housing Office in writing. There will be a $250 cancellation fee if you cancel this assignment after you accept it.
• If you cancel less than 30 days before your move-in date you will be responsible for rent from your move-in date until the end of the 30 days, or until someone else moves into your assignment, whichever is first.
• Cancellations must be made by email to graduatehousing@mit.edu.
• Please note that if you cancel less than 30 days before your move in date, you will be responsible for the rent, regardless of your reason for canceling. Do not assume your department will inform us that you are not attending MIT.
Specific Information for Visitors (e.g. visiting students, post docs, and visiting researchers)
• Visitors may request housing in Single Graduate Housing here. However, priority will be given to fully registered MIT Graduate Students.
• Please indicate that you are a visitor in the MIT ID field, and indicate what dates you want housing for.
• Visitor termination and cancellation policies are the same as the student policies.
• Note that there are rarely any vacancies in Family Housing for visitors; the demand from regular graduate students is too high. We recommend looking into off-campus housing for visitors who are in need of family housing.
