Edgerton House is located in the northwest section of the campus and is a ten-minute walk to the main entrance of MIT. It opened in July, 1990. This apartment style residence accommodates 184 single graduate men and women. Residents in Edgerton House are both new and continuing students.

Living arrangements in Edgerton House consist of several styles of apartments. Edgerton House is a converted warehouse and every room in every apartment is unique. There are 2 studio and 16 one-bedroom units for one student, 37 two-bedroom units for two students, 24 three-bedroom units for three students and 5 four-bedroom duplex units for four students. In the two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, each resident is assigned his/her own bedroom and shares the kitchen, bathroom and living room. There are apartments and rooms specifically modified to accommodate disabled residents. Edgerton House is coed but three- and four-bedroom apartments are single sex. Edgerton House is taking part in a pilot to allow assignments to two-bedroom apartments to be gender neutral. Edgerton House is not furnished, but has wall-to-wall carpeting, central air-conditioning and kitchen appliances (stove and refrigerator).

Common facilities include small lounges on each floor, two larger lounges on the first floor (one is for study, the other is for functions and includes a large-screen television and a stereo system, a pool table, and a ping-pong table), a music practice room, a spacious enclosed courtyard with barbecue, and an equipped exercise room. Equipment such as vacuum cleaners are available for use by the residents.

Resident comments: is a new, clean building with great maintenance staff...is more apartment-like than dorm-like: suitemates instead of roommates...is more expensive than a dorm...is less social and more private than a dorm...has a spacious courtyard and lounge with a great barbecue area...has a weekly coffee hour and movie events...has strong intramural sports participation.

Students comprise the Residents' Association, that has charge of the House Activities Program and relations with the Administration. There is also a Graduate Coordinator assigned to Edgerton House who organizes many opportunities for the residents to get to know each other. The coordinator is an invaluable source of advice and counsel to individuals, both personally and academically. David and Pam Mindell serve as the faculty in residence in Edgerton. They provide guidance and support for the residents and organize events throughout the year.

Commitment to space in this building is from the date of occupancy through the following August 15 and this contract cannot be cancelled. The monthly charge for your room will be included on your Bursar's bill. Please note that Edgerton House cannot allow anyone to move in between August 14 and August 18 unless authorized by the Graduate Housing Office, so your planned occupancy date should be before or after these dates.
