MIT Graduate Housing Eastgate Construction and Parking Information

Parking Update!

If you wish to receive parking in the Eastgate lots for the 2008-2009 school year, you must apply for your permint online at http://web.mit.edu/facilities/transportation by 4PM on September 5, 2008. On September 5, we will be holding a lottery for the 80 spaces available in the lots close to Eastgate, if needed. Anyone who applies for parking after this date will be given space in the Eastgate lots if there is space, otherwise they will have to park in the Westgate lot in the West area of campus.

Priority for spaces will be allocated as follows:

  1. Residents who currently possess an Eastgate Family Parking Permit and wish to continue in the upcoming academic year.
  2. Residents who currently possess an Eastgate Resident Parking Permit and wish to continue in the upcoming academic year with an Eastgate Family Parking Permit.
  3. Residents who currently possess an Eastgate Resident Parking Permit and wish to continue in the upcoming academic year.
  4. Current Eastgate residents wishing to obtain an Eastgate Family Parking Permit in the upcoming academic year.
  5. Current Eastgate residents wishing to obtain an Eastgate Resident Parking Permit in the upcoming academic year.
  6. New residents wishing to obtain an Eastgate Family Parking Permit.
  7. New residents wishing to obtain an Eastgate Resident Parking Permit.

Again, those who do not receive a permit in the Eastgate lots will have to park in the Westgate lot.

For the period between August 15 and September 15, 2008, parking in these lots will be first-come, first-served. Temporary access cards for the lots can be obtained from Carla Bengtson during this period. After September 15, you will need to use your MIT ID card to access the lots, which will be activated by the parking office. Parking applications received by 4PM on September 5 will be available for pickup from Carla Bengtson sometime before September 15. You will receive an email when your permits are ready to be picked up.

Construction

Eastgate is a highrise apartment building housing approximately 200 families at MIT. It is located at the East end of campus, near the MIT Sloan School of Management. Sloan is putting up a major new building adjacent to Eastgate.

Taken from across the street and from the rear corner of Eastgate, this shows the construction immediately adjacent to the building.

This construction is having an impact on Eastgate in the form of parking restrictions and daytime construction noise. Extremely noisy demolition work will be taking place in the Sloan plaza (outside of E53) beginning on June 9 and continuing for at least 8 weeks. This work will go from 7 am to 4 pm on the weekdays and 9 am to 4 pm on Saturdays. This work is expected to be very loud. Work on the structure of the new building above ground will also begin. Once the Fall term begins, construction hours will be Monday through Saturday from 7:00am to 3:00pm, with low-noise producing work from 7:00am-9:00am, some Sundays may be required. The building is expected to open in the fall of 2010.

Applicants to the building should think carefully about how the construction might impact their comfort for the length of their assignment. MIT Facilites provides weekly updates on campus construction for your information.

Parking

This project will affect Eastgate Parking. we encourage all residents to opt out of having a car on campus if possible. Normally residents with children are able to obtain a permit to park in a lot immediately adjacent to the building. This lot will be under construction from June 2008 through June 2009. We expect that these spaces adjacent to the building will be returned to use for Eastgate Families beginning in June 2009. In the meantime, there will be parking for most Eastgate residents in two lots located one and two blocks from the building: the Hayward St Lot and Hawyard Lot Annex. Unfortunately, we expect that some residents will need to park in the Westgate lot, approximately one mile away, until February 2009.

The Eastgate Community Association, along with the Residential Life Associate (RLA) and House Manager, have decided on how parking permits for the 2008-2009 school year will be distributed. Please click here for this information. If you have further questions about the parking permit allocation, please contact Jason McKnight, RLA for Family Housing.
