Family housing is provided in two apartment complexes, Eastgate and Westgate, housing 412 students and their immediate families. The apartments are unfurnished except for a stove, refrigerator, and draperies. Therefore, you may want to arrange for overnight accommodation elsewhere until you obtain furniture. Fully registered graduate students whose families will live with them on a full-time basis are eligible for Family housing. Eastgate and Westgate are residences for students and their immediate family only (partner, spouse, and/or children). You do not need to submit proof of family to apply, but residents must submit proof of family, either when confirming the assignment or when moving in. Changes in family status may affect eligibility and must be reported immediately. Family status changes include a change in the number of immediate family members residing in the apartment or an extended trip planned by the student or family member. If there is a family status change and the student remains eligible for campus housing, a transfer to a more suitable apartment may be necessary. Undergraduate students who are married or have children are eligible for Family Housing. Please check the following chart to determine the type of on-campus apartment your family is eligible for in MIT housing:
Please note: If you are applying for a two bedroom because you or your spouse is pregnant, you/your spouse must be twelve weeks pregnant to apply. Documentation is required. Please note: If you are same sex siblings who are both full-time MIT students, or if your parent is your legal dependent (legal or tax documentation required), you may apply for an efficiency. For more information regarding family status and eligibility, please refer to the Graduate Housing Guide. In early March, the on-line application will be available for the New and Continuing Allocations. For more information on the Allocation Process, please go here. Indicate your choices in order of preference (keeping in mind the restrictions on the eligibility chart above). The application must be submitted by the allocation close date. Students will have the option to change their preferences or withdraw from the Allocation process up until the close date. When you apply, you will receive an automatic response from this office verifying that we have received your application. The email will also contain your preferences and your confirmation code. Make sure you save this email! To make changes, simply use your confirmation code to log back onto the Assignments Preference Page and update your preferences. After the deadline, however, no further changes in a student's application will be accepted. Students who withdraw from the Allocation Process after the deadline will be assessed a $250 penalty. Couples who will both be fully-registered graduate students may both apply to the Allocation process, but in the unlikely event that both students are assigned, one student will have to turn down the assignment and pay the $250 cancellation fee. We will also email the results to everyone, but due to past difficulties with non-MIT emails, we DO NOT recommend relying on your email to find out if you have been assigned. If you don't respond by the deadline because you do not receive an email, you will still be charged the $250 cancellation fee and your space will be reassigned to another student. If you will be unable to check your email during this time, make sure you have someone you trust do it for you. You may also contact the Office before the deadline to make other arrangements if special circumstances will prevent you from having access to your email or the internet during this timeframe. Students who are not assigned through the first round of the Allocation may apply to the second round. Deadlines will be posted on the main web page. Students who are not assigned through the second round may apply to the waitlist and will receive priority. Additional applications to the waitlist are ordered by the date they are received. Any remaining or future vacancies are offered through this waitlist. All efforts will be made to accommodate the move-in date which you request. Once your confirmation email is sent to you with the move-in date, a request to change your occupancy to a later date is not permitted. Rent responsibility will begin on the confirmed date, even if you move in later. Changes to an earlier occupancy date may be accommodated if the assigned apartment is available. You must take occupancy of the apartment within two weeks of the confirmed move in date. Your spouse/family must join you within 30 days. Accepting an apartment and subletting it to another family or leaving it empty is not permitted. It is important that you carefully consider your housing choices. Apply for options that you would feel comfortable in because transfer options from one apartment to another are very limited. For more information regarding the Allocation, please refer to the Graduate Housing Guide.
Students assigned to Family Housing from the New Allocation or from the Waiting List from September 1 through the November Allocation : These residents receive a "new" assignment for housing for two years (through August 15 of the second year). Residents sign a license agreement for the first year. Families assigned must commit to financial responsibility from the date of occupancy through the following August 15. They can renew for the second year in the same apartment as long as they meet eligibility requirements. All of these students will receive notification at the start of the spring term of the year their eligibility ends with instructions to enter the "Continuing Graduate Student Allocation." This allocation will match students with on-campus vacancies according to their preferences. Offers in the Continuing Allocation are for renewable housing, which can be extended as long as registration, family, and housing requirements are met. Students assigned to Family Housing from the Continuing Allocation: These residents receive a "continuing" assignment, which means they may renew their assignment each year until they graduate, as long as they meet eligibility requirements. Students assigned to Family Housing from the Waiting List during the summer : These residents receive either a "new" or a "continuing" assignment, as explained above, depending on which status they qualify for: http://web.mit.edu/housing/grad/ghg/gettingin.html#status Students assigned to Family Housing from the November Allocation (Spring assignments) or from the Waiting List after the November Allocation : These residents receive a maximum 18 month assignment expiring on August 15 of the second year, regardless of their "status." For more information regarding assignment length, status, the Allocation, or termination, please refer to the Graduate Housing Guide.
