[Housing Policies & Regulations]

Sidney-Pacific (SP) is located at 70 Pacific Street and is approximately a 15-minute walk to MIT's main campus. This residence building houses 688 new and continuing residents. Sidney-Pacific is coed, but individual suites are single sex. The building is divided into four wings in the shape of a reversed F with a landscaped courtyard on the interior. Residential parking is available at a fee both in the exterior lot and the underground parking lot. SP is strictly a non-smoking facility (including the courtyard) and offenders may lose their housing assignment.

Rooms come in four types: efficiencies, doubles, quads, and double apartments. Efficiencies are single occupancy rooms with a kitchen and bathroom (~300-350 sq. ft.). Doubles are two joint single occupancy rooms (each ~180-235 sq. ft.) that share a common kitchen and bathroom (~200 sq.ft). Quads are the same size as doubles with double occupancy (two people in each room). Double apartments are also two joint single occupancy rooms (each ~180-205 sq. ft.), but unlike a double, the apartment contains a full living room and kitchen (~550 sq.ft.), as well as an additional bathroom. There are only six double apartments in SP and they are only available through in-house lottery.

SP residents have many resources at their disposal. The courtyard contains a large patio area with BBQ grills. The first floor contains two bike rooms, a computer resource room with 14 computers and 5 printers, a number of common/multi-purpose rooms, a music room, a game room, a fitness center, and a laundry room. Floors 2-6 contain lounges with TVs, DVD players, etc. Floors 2-5 contain study rooms with classroom-sized whiteboards. Floors 2-9 are all equipped with common kitchens complete with TVs and entertainment systems. Residents may check out items from the front desk including vacuums, cots, board games, and movies from an extensive movie collection.

Professor Roger Mark and his wife, Dottie serve as Housemasters while Professor Annette Kim and her husband, Roland Tang, serve as Associate Housemasters. The Housemasters provide guidance and support for the residents and organize events around the year.

The student component of SP adopts a hybrid parliamentary style of government. Committee Chairs are appointed annually by the presiding SP Executive Council (SPEC) while Hall Councilors are elected directly by the residents, annually. In turn, 4 out of 5 members of the following SPEC are elected by the officers while the final member is elected solely by the Hall Councilors. This hybrid system was constructed to strike a balance between efficiency and adequate representation of residents. For more information, please visit: http://s-p.mit.edu/docs/constitution_faq.php

SP hosts a variety of events throughout the year, organized by officers of the House Council. These events include coffee hours every Wednesday, monthly brunches, and large events ranging from dance parties to etiquette seminars. Smaller events such as cultural celebrations, outing to concerts, museums, and sports games as well as hall events that encourage neighborly interaction occur on a regular basis. In addition, officers also maintain resources such as the movie library, computers, A/V equipment, and web infrastructure. Residents are encouraged to participate in adding to the atmosphere at SP. Numerous opportunities exist for creative initiatives and new events. The Housemasters, House staff and officers are all committed to make life at SP even better. If you have any questions or comments, please email spec@mit.edu.

Financial commitment is from the date of occupancy through August 15. Continuing students have the option of renewing annually. A $5 monthly house tax levied to help maintain the common room equipment and to support events and programming.

Sidney-Pacific cannot allow anyone to move in between August 14 and August 18 unless authorized by the Graduate Housing Office, so your planned occupancy date should be before or after these dates.
