Graduate House Governments
Ask not what your House Government can do for you,
but what you can do for your House Government!
Ok, so that's not exactly what JFK said in his inaugural speech, but
it's a great introduction to talk about serving as an officer for
your residence!
Each of the Graduate Residences has a House
Government which is typically made up of
officers who are elected by their fellow
residents.
The House Governments are an integral part of
residents' experiences in Graduate
Housing. Officers are responsible for many
different activities, from organizing social
events to acting as a liaison between the
residents and the administration.
The Governments may be small like in Green
Hall with only a few officers, or very
large like in SP with over 50
officers. The number of officers is based on the
size of the student population (and the style of
government the students are interested in), and the
types of positions are determined by the needs of
the students.
Eastgate and Westgate, for instance, recently
formed house governments, and they now have
special officer positions to address the needs of
couples and families.
As an officer, you have a chance to become an
active part of the MIT residential
community. Whether you help assign rooms in the
Ashdown internal lottery, care for the house fish in Sidney-Pacific,
organize a ski trip in Edgerton, or plan a BBQ on the Warehouse roof deck, you
make Graduate Housing a better place to live!

Ashdown Officers, circa 2004
In turn, being an officer makes Graduate Housing a
better place for you to live, too. Officers in Ashdown and Sidney-Pacific
gain seniority points, which they may use in internal room lotteries to compete for the most desirable rooms.
Another incentive to serving as a House Office is,
of course, the opportunity to live on-campus
without having to be assigned through the main Graduate Housing Allocation
process (the Housing Lottery). When officers are elected (or
re-elected!) in the spring, they are automatically
granted housing for the upcoming year.
Housemasters may also request continuing status for outstanding, long serving officers.
